people who have painted their rotor hats
I'm starting to mask off my new rotors for painting (they didn't come coated so I wanted to paint the hat to keep the rust away). My question is did you paint the rotor surface about a 1/2" outboard of the hat area? It doesn't look like the pads hit this area.
Thanks

i had my rotors and calipers powder coated body color (pewter) and it looks great. over 30k with no problems wih flaking or anything like that.
when they powder coated the rotors the did the entire thing even into the cooling fins then turned the rotors on a lathe to take the paint off the braking surface.

I painted mine silver when I first put them on. It did not look as good on the front cause they always got so dirty. And I did not know how much to tape. Luckily when I did them after they where on the car for like 10k it was a no brainer. They have chipped but I painted them black to match my wheels so the dirt hides better. I would say that if you give yourself about a 1/8th inch it would be good. If you went a quarter and it touched the pad I would be no big deal as long as it is not on to thick.

I painted the hat of my stock rotors multiple times and all they did was look like crap again in a few months, so I had to upgrade. Check these out:
I bought a set of four rotors from RacingBrake, they're not factory blanks that have been modified - these guys actually make the rotor with curved vanes and use EDP coating both inside and outside of the rotor to provide a tough yet good looking coating. I've been running them for ~6 months now and they stilll look great.
Just giving you folks another option...

I painted mine with rust-paint, just removed the wheel, and carefully sprayed the edge of the rotor and the hat, in quick bursts. Didn't even mask off anything, just was close and careful. Do this at your own risk. Still looked good after 10k miles. Rust free. It was rust protection paint from Autozone, just a few bucks.

I just did my rotors today. I masked them off around the groove about a 1/4" from the base of the hat. Like the ones above. I used POR-15 first and then a top coat of semi-gloss. Did the same thing to my stock rotors when I got it, never had an issue. I need to get some pics but my camera battery's are dead.
