Default Painting Calipers/Hubs

Do I actually need to buy a special "kit" to paint my calipers or could I pick up some sort of enamel paint instead? I know it needs to be high heat but I hate to spend $20+ on a kit and not even have enough to finish all 4 calipers.

And could I use the same paint to paint the hubs? Both the hubs and calipers are getting brownish from the years of tarnish and I'd like to spruce up the hubs as well.

Thanks.

what I have seen of the kits they are brush on and I had a friend try that and well it looked brushed on. I used I temp black spray paint on my hubs but I polished my calipers (on the car....just dont do it! by the time I got to the last one I hated I started the first one) but as far as I know you can just use high temp spray paint on them also but you want to make sure that you mask them off so not to get paint on the pistons.

Im sure some one else will chime in with better advice.

I bought the kit at Oreilly's, and painted two complete sets of calipers, and still have enough to do another set or two. Also comes with a good brake cleaner. Buy a few small paintbrushes (for model cars), as the caliper paint sets up FAST! It's been almost two years, and they look new.

Cool. I guess I'll pick up a kit after all. Thanks.

You have to remove the brake line to take the caliper completely off, right? I figured I would just try painting the caliper still bolted on.

You can do it while still bolted on. I just cleaned/sanded/painted the parts that would be visible from the outside.

Cool. That was my plan. Paint anything visible.

i used the brush on and painted all sides of the caliper except where the lines hook up and the brackets. it took about 7 layers to look nice.

I just used regular DupliColor silver and clear, not engine enamel or special brake paint or anything. Did it over a year ago, and the calipers look the same as the day I painted them.

I cleaned mine off with a wire wheel, then brake cleaner, then soap and water. Took 3 coats of primer, 3 coats of paint, and 2 coats of clear a caliper to look good.
