Default front wheel bearings... 4th gen

how would I know if they were going bad ?

I'm hearing a "hum" coming from the front end, but it could be the new brand of tires I installed...

Best way to check is to wiggle the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. If there is any play then the bearing is bad.
