Re: How often should you realistically bleed your brakes?
Speed bleeders are a great idea. Even if you still bleed normally (open and close the valve), it helps keep air out, no matter what. It is a habit for me to bleed by opeining and closing the bleeder, but either way, they are worth the money.
I usually bleed the brakes every 6 months or before events, whichever comes first.

What kind of brake fluid should I use and should I flush it out and if so, how? Doesn't brake fluid break down after so long? The car has 36k and it is pretty dark. I'm doing my cam swap very soon so that might make it easier since I can dump the resevouir(sp?) out. Thanks.

How do you bleed the brakes and why do you have to do it?

Bleeding the brakes is important primarily to get the moisture out of the system and prevent rust in the lines and calipers. Once every two years is OK, once a year is better.
Use any high quality high temp fluid made for disc brakes.

Re: How often should you realistically bleed your brakes?
My routine was to run a bottle of Motul 5.1 through the system before each road course event and a whole system flush once a year. That got to be pricey and a PITA.
I switched to Castrol SRF last fall and have bled the brakes one time since. So, for me, it was justifiable.
The thing about brake fluid, is that it has a very short shelf life. It loses ANY shelf life once you break the seal on the bottle.
So, if you decide to bleed the brakes, go ahead and use up the entire bottle.
For a street car, once a year should be fine and friends of mine had great things to say about Valvoline brake fluid. Comes in a quart bottle which kind of gold in color. This is the stuff I use in my tow truck and my wife's Bronco and my duaghter's Honda.

I've been using up my cans of Ford Dot 3 (the stuff in actual cans that was good fluid that stays fresh). I am starting to use ATE super blue. ($9.99 a can from www.ogracing.com and others).

Re: How often should you realistically bleed your brakes?
How much fluid do you guys use during a typical flush? And with regard to the SRF, I've read that you can't mix it with other fluids. So how did you bleed the brakes without mixing it?
