Is there any advantage in running 17's over 18's?

Default Is there any advantage in running 17's over 18's?

I'm looking for new wheels. I've always had 18's on my WS6, but was just offered some 17's for a ridiculous price. I'm just wondering if there are any advantages to running 17's rather than 18's? Also, do they make a 295/xx/17 tire? I can't seem to find one.

more sidewall height = better traction

smaller wheel = less rotating mass

so unless you dont care about hooking up or going faster, yes, there are advantages to 17's over 18's

what size are the rims, 17x?? that will tell you what size tire you can squeeze under there, remember there are guys pulling the tires with 275-xx-17s, so its all in the setup, not just how wide the tire is

yeah they are a hell of a lot cheaper!!!! haha other than that nothing really... i love 17's i would never go any bigger than 17 IMO... and yeah they have a 295 40 17 tire... but how wide is the rim? depends on the how wide the rims is, if it's a 9-9.5in wide then put a 275 on it if its a 10-11 put a 315 35 17... and so on and so forth... but i doubt it's wider than 11, what kind of wheels are they?

I want to run 295's because that's what i currently have on the rears right now, and don't want to go any narrower.

what size is the rim? and trust me, the added sidewall height should make up for the small loss in width easily, and be much less overall rotating mass

well i dont care what anyone says, this is just my own opinion from seeing it on other cars... if you get a tire that is wider than the rim the tire is giong to buldge out over the rim and looks like ****... some people like that and for that all i have to say is for his, his own... a 17X9.5 calls for a 275/40 17 tire and trust me the diff is not much... 20mm to be exact.... plus there isnt as much of a selection for 295's as there are for 275's and the 275's are prob. cheaper... but that is just my .02...

plus the 275-40-17's on my car prolly look just as wide as the 295-18's on your old setup. if you can get the wheels for a good deal, you will hook up better, have better trap speeds, and spend a lot less come new tire time. but dont listen to me, i haven't been there, done that

If you are looking for function, 17's are the best for handling in our tire height. They still have enough side wall to hook decently. In corners they will give enough, but not too much. They are stiff enough, but not too stiff.

An 18 by no means will turn your car into a piece of ****. For street purposes you will hardly notice any difference. Some people thing 18's look better, but I think a 17 is the perfect size on an F Body. I would just get whatever you think looks better.

I actually have 295/30/19's right now.

What if I got a 285/40/17? Would that look just as wide as what I have right now?

Dont forget that most big brake kits require you to use 18's just throwing that out there...

I'm sticking with 17's until a brake ugrade requires more clearance.

The wheel weight argument only works if you get heavier wheels. Every time I've changed wheels, they've gotten lighter.

Tell me which is heavier, 20lbs 18's or 22 lbs 17's If nothing else, get more metal at the same weight and cut down on tire weight.
