Angry Damn shifter broke this morning in traffic.

Of all days for this to happen it's pouring down rain and there's a wreck on 635, so I'm stuck in traffic. I go to put it in first, hear/feel a snap and the shifter (Pro 5.0) is free range. No matter what I tried I couldn't get it in gear.

I figured that one of the bolts that hold the handle on came out (or maybe both,) so I lifted the boot and shifted with the shortest short shifter ever. They've been loose and I've been meaning to tighten them down but never did. Procrastination does this type of thing I suppose.

What's best to use on the bolts to make sure it doesn't happen again? Loc-Tite with locking nuts?

Thats what I did with mine. I have the 5.0 with a short stick. Hit second gear and bam. I was able to coast onto a side road out of traffic. I lifted the boot and sure enough one bolt was off. I put the bolt back on and eased home. Once I got back I made sure that wouldn't happen again.

I can't see the bolts because I put the rubber boot back over the base of the shifter, I'll probably leave it off next time. Debating if I'm going to call someone to bring me some tools or if I'm going to try to rig it for the drive back.

Definately use loctite but back it up with lock washers or lock nuts.

Another vote for locktite. Then never worry about it again.

get a bolt that goes all the way through and then use a locking nut to make sure it doesnt come back out again!

At least it wasn't as bad as what happened to me once. Racing a mustang in a 99 SS, I grabbed second. Almost literaly. I ripped the whole shifter out of the transmission! Oops. A little heli-coil, drill bits and loc-tite later, I was back in business.

I had another time too where on a different car, the pin from the clutch pedal that attatches to the master cylinder rod snapped off and I had no clutch pedal. I killed the starter a little later after that.

I still like the shifter, a minor modification to the bolts isn't a big deal in my opinion.

I didn't realize my car would be under 4 inches of snow this morning but I got the shifter back together. Didn't feel like going to the parts store so I'll have to do that a little later.

For me, it is because of the cheap *** hardware that comes with my Ebay short stick, used some LS1 head bolts in place of them, we will see if they hold better....LOL

I'm trying to figure out also how you guys have had issues? IIRC I didn't do anything at all extra to the bolts on the WS6 Store short stick I ordered with my shifter a few years ago now. I haven't touched anything since I installed it. No reason to. The loctite is probably a good idea but its not even something I would think of as necessary for a shifter handle?

From my understanding, this is normal on Pro 5.0 shifters with the stock Pro 5.0 handle/bolts. If you do a lot of hard shifting then the bolts back out over time since they don't have nuts on the other end (the bolts don't extend far enough through the shifter to put them on.)
