Got my first dog last night, any tips
I was out taking pictures of my LED license plate bracket I built last night, when a girl walked up and asked if I knew anybody who wanted free puppies. She had 4 of them, said they were 6 weeks old and a mix of german shephard and golden retriever, both of which are very good dogs. I picked one out, and now have a puppy. I dropped him off at the vet earlier to have him looked over and make sure he isn't sick before I drop any money for shots on this thing. I have been around animals my whole life, but have never raised or trained a dog. Anybody got any tips or stories they want to share?

awww, the most important thing is puppies need soooo much love and alot of attention and the sooner you attempt to train them the better it will come out in the end. Potty training is super important if you dont train your dog to go outside when they have to go to the bathroom they will end up going the bath room inside FOREVER. its a nightmare!! so just be really patient!

Don't know much about German Shephards, but we have two Goldens. Great dogs, lots of energy. Get out and start walking quick. You can train them yourself. Took me a while before someone taught me this trick. Take the dog walking or running etc and THEN try to teach it something. The oldest is now 9 and has always been mellow. The "puppy" that is now 4 is still a bundle of energy. But if you get her worn out, she will concentrate on you, and she is smart. Catch the Dog Whisperer on TV. Sounds like of crazy, but it works. Its funny when we are at the park and she is running wild, everyone says "That dog is crazy" Then you say "sit, down, roll over, etc. She stops and starts obeying commands. They are still dogs, but don't have to be uncontrollable. Good Luck!

You need to take them out often and play with them. They need things to chew on and play with or you will have furniture and things with teeth marks. Taking them out often helps with energy levels and potty training them.
Good luck with your dogs, i love mine like they were my kids. 2 pitbulls that are just huge lapdogs

First of all vicouSS you are hott. Now back to the topic, I have a part pit part German shephard mix. I love her to death. My grandmothers next door neighbors kids found her and her brother in a box behind there house. My dog I'd a year old and amazing. Good guard dog and LOVES to play. She pissed and **** in the house for the first couple of months but after taking her outside she starting going to the back door and whines to go potty. She sits on command and she listens pretty well. Be patient, an old shoe is a perfect chew toy, she/he will learn just be patient. Shots are important.

A very good thing if he is an indoor dog to say something everytime you take him out. For example my 7 month old pit bull/ lab puppy every time I would take him out I would say need to go potty? now when I say it I can tell if he needs to go to the bathroom.
Also use postive reinforcement works great, everytime you take him out and he goes to the bathroom give him a dog snack. They learn quick with that!

training ASAP it's never too soon, and lots of tough love. with puppies if you give them an inch they take a mile. so you HAVE to resist the urge to baby it, as much as you may think this thing is your child it isn't, it's a dog and dogs have a completely different way of learning than humans. they respond to dominance and confidence, also with a puppy repetition and consistency are a big key.
lol and if you question my knowledge i have been training dogs my whole life, most of which end up as hunting dogs. and all we've ever had were golden retrievers.
this one is my third he has trophy winning parents. his name is harley joe and weighs @ 110-113 lbs.

kennel train them for when your gone or need to put them up. I trained my bullmastiff immediately from when he was a pup. Put something in the kennel with your scent on it.It gives them comfort.

Thanks for all the replies and tips. I got him back from the vet today, and he does have worms. They gave me some medicine for it, Drontal dewormer, told me to give him half a pill today, and then a whole pill in 3 weeks. He seems to be doing better already, and got rid of a LOT of worms. I gave him a nice bath, and took him on a walk. He is doing fairly well with potty training, I am very surprised at how well for how long I have had him. The vet told me the dog is around 8 weeks old, not 6 like I thought, so the first DHPPCV vaccine was done today. I also named him Turbo. Here's a pic
The girls like him more than me Had about 4 or 5 come up to me today while I had him outside talking to me about how cute he is. I could get used to this
