DFW Looking for an honest machine shop for a stock rebuild
I have a basically free 4.8 that spun main bearing(s). It also shattered the oil pump. Or vice versa. Idk.
I would like to bring this motor back to life with an economy rebuild.
I've broken it all down and everything on the top end looks great.
Regarding the lower end, 4 of the 5 main bearing caps still have the factory cross hatch.
#2 main cap that had a spun bearing has a little gouge in it.
All of the cylinders still have factory cross hatch. Remarkable. This motor has over 400k miles on it.
Pistons and rods seem to be in shape also. Bearings are rough, but the journals look good.
Crank is questionable according to my novice knowledge (main bearing journal is rough on 2 journals) and rod journals aren't perfect.
I've been told cranks can sometimes be fixed. Or I can get a good used crank ridiculously cheap.
I understand these 4.8 and 5.3's are considered throw aways.
Virtually nobody rebuilds them. If I can freshen this back up for a decent price I would love to do so rather than buy a junkyard motor.
Can someone recommend a machine shop in DFW that will a) give me a fair breakdown of costs b) a trustworthy place and c) a place that won't just tell me the motor is trashed due to being able to buy a junkyard replacement fairly cheap.
I would prefer to have a refreshed motor rather than a junkyard motor.

You can search this site as well and you'll find plenty of feedback.

Interesting that you guys mentioned that shop.
They're in downtown old Irving, right?
I actually work in Irving and pretty sure I've seen it on my way to and from lunch.
I'll check it out. Thanks guys.
