I have looked into it several times because I have driven long distances to save money. I always evaluate the costs.

I also factor in how much fun road trips are and the fact that I can make most of them on a tank of fuel or less, and that cost compared to the savings usually makes it worth it.

I understand and agree with what you said about the weight savings vs a tubular front end. But if you are going for a budget build then neither the aluminum block or tubular front end will be part of the build lol.
True on the budget small vs big LOL. For me, I can't stand the weight penalties associated with dead iron weight.

Go aluminum!! I hate the iron block in my 2000 Z28. As soon as I complete my LQ iron block build I came across a deal I couldn't resist...... a aluminum 5.3 block. It'll be going in my car soon. I'm go have the 5.3 block dry sleeved got big cubes. Kinda like having my cake and eating it too.

If your plans are to stay N/A then yes I would fork out the extra cash for a good Aluminum block (not LS1) if you plan to go FI I'd stick with iron.

I can't either, but I have to think from the perspective of having a small budget until these damn kids quit free loading, lol.

That's what I'm thinking at this point. Hopefully this spare stroker crank is still good enough for an alum 383 or 402 (depending on what deal comes up).
