F'd up LT1!

I have a 96 LT1 (auto)....yea I know....I'm trying to get a better one. Anyway, when I take off, just to pull out into traffic or not, the car will go through first fine, but when I get to second gear it completely boggs down and loses power. I usually let off, and try to make it go away, but it normally just has to go through second and sometimes third to stop bogging. Any ideas what is wrong with it? Oh yea, the SES light will come on, and sometimes flash when it boggs.

-Kell

Does anyone know a good place to take an LT1 where I can be sure that they know what they are doing?

SES Flashing = Misfire

I'd bet you have optispark problems, a dead plug wire, or need a plug change. My 94Z did similar stuff when the #5 wire was laying on the header. :) Plugs and wires would be the first things to check (not necessarily replace, just check).

AutoTap would tell you exactly which cylinder is triggering the misfire. I've seen it as simple as a poorly connected spark plug boot (with AutoTap, it gives misfire counts... look for the cylinder that's counting up a lot... check the plug wire).

How much do optisparks cost? I know what it is....just no clue as to how much I might be spending. I've done something like AutoTap...not sure if it's the same, but I had a guy ride with me and scan my car while i drive. It showed up as a cylinder 2 misfire, but I wasn't sure if that would be it. I've heard about the optispark problem....that'd suck if it's what it is.

A 96 Opti would run somewhere between 200-250 (not sure on the exact price) from a decent GM dealer (like Scoggin-Dickey here). Do NOT buy a remanufactured unit from somewhere like AutoZone or O'Reillys, you'll just have to do the job again in a few months.

The pain is not as much in the cost, as the labor to swap it out. Gotta pull the waterpump, which means more mess. GM put it in exactly the wrong spot.

try other things first, and try and isolate the problem to the optispark. remember, its a dealer electrical part and they usually will not take it back if it does not fix your problem, not that you'd want to take it off again anyway.

change plugs first, if it still does it, swap wires around and see if the missfire is from the same cylinder. then go to the optispark.

EXACTLY

If you have not done plugs and wires recently, it would be a great idea, the optispark runs about 225 to 350$$$depending on where you buy it. You get what you pay for, No rebuilds, they suck....
Labor can be any where from 4 hours and up, shop around. Lloyd

Hey Kelli,
I figured you would have changed those wires by now after we took it for a test run. I agree w/ the rest of them, Certainly try the wires/plugs 1st. Let me know how it goes.

If you want hook up w/ me and Josh next weekend and we can put a little more time into it. I was pushed for time the last time you came over.

I have all the tools here at the house if you want to GTG this next weekend.
See ya

Hahahahahahahaha That is great!!
When my grandfather cant figure out what is wrong with a car he taps all of the sensors and waits for a difference in the tone of the motor, thats why I find that so funny!!
LMAO :jest:

Better yet, we should make it my two wheels, for a little closer race.
Especially when I leave you on a wheel stand.
I dont need no struts anyway, even though my QA1 spit out the Valve and drained out all the oil.
