Default HELP with overheating now please!!!

About a month ago the low collant light started to come on everyonce in a while. The coolant was full so I figured faulty sensor. My car has a 160 degree stat and the temp usually stayes between 160-180. Now the past 2 days the car will climb to a tad over 210 but I havent seen it go past that. But the weird thing is when I start driving it goes back down to about normal. The fans are turning so I have no idea what to do. My mechanic said there was a TINY leak in the water pump but nothing to worry about. Please help me guys

I had that same problem last year. Sounds like your getting ready to change a water pump. Mine was not leaving puddles of water under the car, but losing enough to make the temp guage read erratic. Changed the water pump and problem was solved.

I'm with floman. Mine behaved the same way, only I don't have a 160* t-stat, so mine went to the mid-range between 210 and HOLY CRAP! Took it to a dealership and they replaced the water pump, to the tune of $738. Problem solved.

It was after this that I made a more concerted effort to fix my own car.

let it heat cycle in your drive way it could be an air lock. When I did my heads and cam it took me about 30min of heat cycling to get all of the bubbles out.

I had the same problem a while back. I thought it was the water pump also, in turned out to be the sensor on the radiator. It takes about 15 min to change it out. The sensor is around $45 at the dealer ship, but if i was you i would fix the leak to.

I think he's referring to the coolant level sensor in the radiator tank over by the battery. That sensor has an o-ring that can go bad and leak water.

That little leak could be causing some of the water to vaporize and steam dosent cool for a ****.

I had the opposite happen.

My temps were around 190 with the stock thermostat and reprogrammed fans. I put in a 160 thermostat, lost alot of coolant and tried to refill it. Started running around 220 at lights and around 180 as long as I stayed moving.

Flushed the radiator with all new coolant and temps stayed around 190 constant, even at lights. My low coolant light came on last Saturday night. It's since turned off as of yesterday. I think it's the sensor.
