Emissions tester question

Emissions tester question The other day I was taking the 288S exit off of 610 and saw a portable emmisions tester. What do they do if your emissions are too high ? Warning ? Fine ? Just curious as I was in a POS work truck that needs new cats.
They mail you something saying you need to get the car inspected within a certain time frame.
From what I have "heard", mounted on that tripod is a sort of laser or infrared beam or something, and if it can't "see" well enough after your car has passed, chances are your car is putting out too much emissions, and the subsequent test will reveal the true story.
In other words, avoid them at all costs! Or get in a big truck and monster truck over the tripods
