Default question about TX (tarrant co.) emissions

almost ready to get the inspection on my GTA! small problem... the exhaust just snapped clean off right at the edge of the cat, on the engine side!

the exhaust is still in place, it just has a crack all the way around the pipe, right before the cat. i will be going to a 'friendly' shop that will not care about the noise or the cracked pipe itself, but i'd still need to pass the sniffer.

for OBD-I cars that get the sniffer, do they fail if you if you dont have enough emissions coming through the tailpipes? can i just band-aid it by wrapping up the broken part with exhaust tape?

at a friendly inspection shop, yes, you can wrap it.

Why not just fix the issue and weld it back up?

its a time/money issue. my temp plate expires at the end of the month (just over a week), so i dont have the time to deal with the hastle of dealing with an exhaust shop. i know someone that *might* be able to weld it for free for me, but i dunno if i'd be able to get it done in time, so thats why i'm just looking for a temporary band aid while i work on the more pertinent issues the car is having.

also, since the exhaust manifolds and y-pipe are pretty rusty, i might just hold out fixing it until i have money to buy some clean, used headers and Y-pipe. too bad OBD-I cars need the sniffer, or i'd just tune the cats out of the computer too

AN exhaust shop would do it for prolly 20 bucks! and it would take about 30 minutes of their and your time.
