Default Figures! Just bought car ... now SES comes on!

Hey guys,
I drove about 15 minutes, went to a store, came out 15 minutes later, drove down the road a few minutes got on it a tiny bit and then noticed 'service engine soon'. I took it to auto zone and it said "PO300" - the PCM has determined that multiple random misfires have occurred. Troublecode OBDII (Alpha) P Code. Is this something to be concerned about? What should I do?

I was wanting to take it to the track tomorrow but definitely do not feel comfortable with running it now when the SES light is on.

Get it checked further depends on miles, plugs, wires, fuel filter, injector could be anything or a cat in the beginning stages of failure. Just don't start throwing parts at it

Check this website out gearchatter.com it gives you an idea on what SES codes mean and what to check.

weird, that code usually only comes on when there is a cam installed and no tuning has been done.

It isn't a really bad code, they are only bad when the SES is flashing

Nine Ball, I picked the car up a few days ago and have been driving it about 60 miles or so - would it just come on now? Further, would you recommend me staying away from the track even though it isn't flashing?

If it isn't running weird, I'd have no problem racing it. You might check the spark plugs, plug wires, etc.. to see if any are loose.

Go put some more miles and re-starts on it, it might clear the code by itself.

I agree, dont just start throwing parts at it unless you have the money and they were going to be replaced anyways(mods). How many miles are on it? Might need atleast plugs if theres alot. Your only in trouble if the ses is flashing so wouldnt worry too much.

Sounds like it needs a tune and to disable the misfire diagnostics.

I thought that came as part of the tune once you installed mods...

if your car has a cam, you need to get the PO300 random misfire code disabled. It will appear off/on, usually if the car is idling for a long time (like at a drive-thru or in traffic)

Yeah, Nine Ball nailed it. The car needs a tune, and doesn't sound like it had one... at least not a good one.
