HOA's Yay or Nay? My brother and I were having a discussion about it. Your thoughts and why? My HOA fees now will be $350 a year, which goes to the upkeep of the pools, entrance to the neighborhood, etc etc. I’m trying to keep a positive outlook on it. If I have to keep my yard maintenanced and pretty then I’m happy all the other people on the street do as well. I’ve heard horror stories about nazi HOA’s though. Anyone have personal experience? |
Yea, wait till they start enforcing the CCR's on your a$$! haha Jk Me personally, I don't like being told what to do...America is based upon freedom of choice. |
Nay, I agree with above. |
YAY I live in an area with a hoa I like it. Dont have to worry about somebody painting there house purple. Yeah it may be a free country and all that stuff, just dont take down the home values in the neighborhood with cars on blocks and roosters and peacocks in the back yard. |
I support them as well. In fact, I just moved from a neighborhood that was very strict in their policies. I even got a letter once stating that I had to move my car when I left it on jack stands for just one Saturday night. Although it is irritating getting those letters it is nice to know that they are doing the same for others in the neighborhood to keep the values up. And just FYI those HOA fees were $960 a year. :mad2: But that covered the gate maintnance, a Splash Pad (waterpark) for the kiddies, 24 hour security guard, and maintaining entrance and roads among other things. yea ours sucks, we pay around 300 and we have yet to recieve a pool key. Time to move this value is going down |
Jaypee... $350.00 per year is nothing... that's a good price... However, it can and usually goes up every year or every couple of years... Depending on development. It's worth it.. JMO... |
Just so the dues are low and the people arent HOA Nazi's. |
Ours are 500 year which isnt to bad but the people are BITCHY. I get a notice everytime I pull the 69 out of the garage to work on it. There is a no jun k car rule. Plus we cant have the trailer or the boat on the property, cant build the shop my dad want which has me POed cause he was gonna go all out with a bad ass air system and two lifts. I hate the stuck up snobby people in this town, my parents dont give a damn anymore and they keep building materials in the side yard (rock left over from the house my mom has been using for the retaining wall and gardens and shit like that) and they burn tree limbs when we cut them. Haha really pissed off some of the neighbors. |
I am for them as well. About $500 a year pays for front yard mowing, upkeep of grounds, gate maintenance, security guard and so much other stuff it just makes too much sense. Plus the added value of what has already been mentioned, no cars on blocks and parked in the street and yard stuff. |
Weighing the good against the bad they are a good thing in most cases. I like mine so far. It got a crappy beat up car out of a guys drive way down the street from my house. I can really see the effect of these teaser rates and variable interest rates now judging by some of the people in my neighborhood. Hopefully most of them will have to foreclose. |
if you really want to know about it, go check the board members homes... I bet you they dont follow the rules...Its all about money....find a good neighborhood with out it and you wil never have to worry about it |
SSSSUKKKAAA!!!! I pay 40$ a year....i dont know what they do with it so im prolly just getting ripped off:jest: I live in a decent hood, not bad at all, i am the "loud guy" on the block and my pit bull didnt help me set good with my neighbors to the left due to murdering their cat, but oh well. |
hate em. property value for the most part goes up anyways. even if an appraiser never come and appraises your house they raise it according to what it was appraised for last year and add some on top this year. |

My HOA SUCKS!! I only pay $350 a year but I often wonder where the hell the money goes to other than sending letters to me about stupid ass Sh!t. They send me a letter about my yard if I go longer than 6-7 days without mowing it yet there are yards MUCH worse than mine and the common ground looks worse than my yard........... /rant off |
They can be both good and bad, I pay $500 a year, My dad pays $6500 a year for his, Its probably worth is in both cases, but I will admit I get alot of citations for stuff, Guess if I am the worst person in the neighborhood, the neighborhood can't be too terrible. |
I think mine is $600/yr, but I don't think HOA's are always good. I've found that neighborhoods with newer, higher priced homes tend to have owners that take care of them better anyways. Not really a need for HOA in a new or pricey neighborhood, at least for the first 10 yrs. I remember getting a stupid warning about having my truck parked in front of my house with my car hauler attached to it, with a car on it. I had it ready to travel to an event the next morning and they griped about having a trailer in front of the house. I live in a cul-de-sac, no traffic even drives by. |
The HOA in my neighborhood literally are Nazi's. We are constantly violating their policy's and receiving letters about it. You're not allowed to have cars parked in the street for more than a few hours. You must mow your grass every 7 days (Weather permitting). Your garage door is only allowed to be open if you're actively moving something in or out of it (I.E. They get mad if you leave it open while working outside). You have to get their approval before you add any plants/trees to your yard. If you do anything in the back yard that will stick up over the fence and be visible to the other neighbors (I.E. A swingset for your kids, a tree, a bush, a Gazebo) you must get the approval of the HOA. They charge like $750 a year and all they really do is keep the entrance of the neighborhood clean and the neighborhood pool clean. What makes it worse is that the President of the HOA lives directly across from us and is always sure to leave notes on our front door when we're in violation of something. LOL. |
I currently live in an old neighborhood that basically has no HOA. It has a voluntary group that can only enforce the deed restrictions that were written 60 years ago. Sure you can paint your house whatever color you want, but..... Folks don't mow their yard They drive through their yard or park on it Folks don't paint their houses at all People have Xmas reindeer that stay up in the yard year round Some guy still has ducktape on his windows from Rita Junk cars Etc..... Id rather have a strict HOA than no HOA at all. Yea, I'd probably get in trouble if I had a strict HOA for car stuff, but it would be worth it to me if it meant everyone on my street had to keep their house clean and tidy. |
