Hey guys,

I looking to trade my 03 Mazda 6 for a 03-05 Silverado 1500. The trade in value on the car (stated in NADA) is $10,925. It's in great condition and well maintained. I would like to trade it in for a truck of the same value, I have been looking on Autotrader and found some decent trucks at dealers for around 11K-12K. Will dealerships do this? If not what is the lowest difference they will take for a trade in?

I Have never purchased from a dealer so I have no clue, always been intimidated by them, and would like to get some advice before I go so I don't get raped.

Not really, I deal with this stuff everyday. I'm not sure how much lower they usually go but I can guarantee you that you will NEVER recieve Blue or Blackbook values. Your best bet value wise usually is to sell it outright or to sell it at a place like carmax.

i would agree, instead of trading to a dealer i would just sell it to someone for like 500 above trade in or something, sure to be a quick sale

A dealer will do a trade...they will even pay you money if your car is worth more than theirs. However, there's no way they'll give you NADA trade-in value. Most of them want to offer you wholesale.

wholesale is what a dealer will give you for your trade. NADA and blue book is what retail value is (what you could sell it for) Alot of people misunderstand that.

And carmax will dick you over on a low cheezball price. My 00 SS 6 spd with 60k miles, they offered me 5800 bucks for it-- and it was freakin clean.

Most dealership book cars out at either rough or avg book. Unless your car has no miles on it, was trailered in with all the factory wrappings still on it with the window sticker in the window will you get clean book.

Black Book Dec 31 edition (for a 2001 Camaro)

Rough book is $5075, Avg is $6725
add 100 for chrome wheels, $150 for T-tops, $400 for SS pkg, -$350 for 6spd, and add $400 for the 60K miles if its booked under AVG and add nothing if under rough. Most dealers will book under rough. Now remember this is for a 2001!! on the DEC 31 edition, value drops each week cause this book comes out weekly!!!

yea a dealership will trade you even if youve got a brand new 20k vehicle and you wanna trade for something on their lot thats about 15k

I should have worded my question like this...

Say I had a car that they say they will give me $10,000 for trade in

Then I pick out a truck on there lot priced at 10,000.. Will they make a even trade?

yes, but remember you have to do TT&L but if it is with TT&L the price is 10K then yes, trade in yours and walk out with theirs.

I pretty much made a straight trade in December and had no problem getting top dollar for my trade. Book was 17.5K I got 18K but I also had plenty of offers in the 13-14K range including CARMAX

The trick is to let them know what others are offering and they will try to beat it. It may take 10+ appraisals and some people calling you a liar but it works.

And hell my dad just traded 2 cars got full book and bought one and they mailed him a check last month... I think it all depends on the dealer

One more thing the tax savings on 10K trade is $625 so consider that when valueing an offer vs. selling out right.

Either they took the profit off the sale price and added it to your trade or there gonna leave the sale price alone and add 10K to the trade which will equal a discount of 10K. Its kinda like a sliding ruler, its gotta come from somewhere. if your car is worh $500 and you want $5k for it you think a dealer would actually give you the $5K from the goodness of there heart? They will either take it from the profit of the vehicle or just add it to mark up the vehicle and show you they gave you $5k. I think I explained that right

My buddy recently traded his 2004 VHO Silverado and his wife's 2007 TBSS in on a brand new fully loaded 2008 Avalanche Z71. The dealership ended up owing him money.

we had a guy trade in a Porsche SUV S model for a Tahoe and we owned him a check too It happens.

The correct answer is no, a dealership will not make an even trade, they are in businees to make money, period.

Money wise, they will make and "even trade" if they know they can turn a profit on the sale of the vehicle which was traded in.

This is simple math, people.
