WTF !!! What do you guys think about (NHRA) Nitro cars racing to 1000ft?

I know it’s for safety and they have always measured times at the 1000ft makers even when the finish line was at the 1/4.... IMO its changes things completely, MPH, ET. And they say the tune doesn't change.

True alot of the drivers are say that the tracks need to make the safety changes, not the sport...

it is only a temp. change. Mind you, the cars still can run 300 mph at the 1,000ft. Another 30mph is not killing them! LOL

The new 1000 ft rule is ridiculous. Why don't they just not run TF and FC at E-town where Scott Kallita was killed and leave the other tracks alone? Nope, that would make too much sense which is why NHRA won't do it.

Most of those deals are stuck on a rev limiter by the time they're at 1000 feet anyways.

Two years ago when I was still working on the Pro-Mod team we used to stay after @ the IHRA events to test on Monday and Tuesday and the fuel cars would always be there. They had some seriously amazing carnage to look at. There is so much going on in those cars and so much data to consider it's amazing they can make two identical passes.

One Monday or Tuesday during testing one of the fuel teams had a massive explosion when they loaded the motor up real hard with the clutch and it shot the blower right through the Kevlar blanket and about 30 feet up into the air. When they got the blower back into the pits it had completely destroyed the case and the screws. You really couldn't even tell what it was anymore.

Something else to think about, at 300 mph these cars are traveling about 440 ft/sec which means the extra 320 ft only buys them less than an extra 1 second of shutdown time. Does NHRA really think this extra second would have saved Scott? With no parachute and oil on his brakes? Really.....

I'm sure the NHRA really didn't have much of a choice. I doubt they really wanted to do nothing and seem like they didn't give a ****. I'm sure insurance was a concern as well too.

Think of it like this, why do they keep people off the track at the starting line, and behind a k rail and at least 50ft or so all the way down? You just can't let everyone run around all over the place and say, "they know the dangers". You have to draw the line somwhere.

Pedregon, Force(s), Medlin, and now Kalitta. A few of the biggest crashes, two of which took the drivers' lives. The nitro engines are very volatile and unstable, and when they blow, it usually turns the car into a fireball. I wish reducing the nitro or limiting the rpm would work, but they already went there and tried that and they blew even more engines.

I think the 1000ft deal is a good response, even as "knee jerk" as it is, it was better than nothing. Car goes slower and has more room to shut down. But like mentioned before, I could care less about Top Fuel. But drivers dying sucks.

what exactly are you trying to say? Yeah, i'm aware they are drag racing. but if they are going to bastardize it then just do away w/ it all together.
just like when super chevy used to show up at baytown and then only run 1/8 mile. WTF, it was almost worth asking for your money back. To me the top fuel and funny cars have always seemed like they were there to draw in people that weren't really into the sport. something that looked good on TV. to each their own and thats why i say i like the door slammers a little more.

it would be like nascar telling daytona speedway to cut its race to a 3/8 of a mile. Ihra has 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile nitro racing cause of tracks. sounds like a good safe idea. NHRA needs not to punish the race tracks that has the space and mandate a 1000ft only nitro class.

If yall watched it yesterday they are trying to come up with changes to the cars to limit the speed and go back to the 1320. There is talk of going to 1 magneto, cutting the nitro down in the fuel even more, smaller tires, taking the timing retard away at the transition, smaller blower, smaller fuel pump, etc. They need to so something to slow the cars down a bit. It is weird to see the cars running 1000 ft but its only temporary till they can come up with something. I am glad that they are trying to do something to make it safer, having 2 lives gone to the sport that close together is tragic.

i heard that too, basically it was the comentator speculating on what the crews would propose to NHRA in order to keep it a 1/4 mile race. otherwise it just becomes a burn out competition.

W. G. A. F. they always change the rules anyways. There is always something different, thats why they lose so many drivers is there is never a steady chill mode in racing.

They should make them run on pump gas. That would make it a lot more safe
