Default Welder Question (Picking a...) (links fixed)

I need a welder that would be able to weld a catalyic convertor on. I have no clue when it comes to welding (I wont be the one doing it, I just need the equipment.) I kinda understand the concept. But I dont understand the thickness and strength of the weld and the processes used (Mig Tig Arc). Would this welder work (for a cat):

http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS...ceffdfgidgmk.0
(The first one on the page)

Or would I need something like this:
http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=prod...00001703-K1170

Or something more expensive. I am clueless, can someone shed some light on the subject (and remember, I am just purcahsing the welder, I would never attempt to weld)? Thanks,
John

I cant see either link but, I think it would be cheaper to just get a muffler shop to do it.

For exhaust work a 115 volt mig welder would be the best IMO. Try and get the most amps that you can for future versatility. Look on spending close to $1,000.00 for everything. (bottle, mask, wire, tips, etc. )

A 110V MIG rig would probably do you jsut fine.

Tractor Supply has a Hobart125 for ~$370 and it comes with regulator for gas, gun, wire ... basically ready to go. Hobart is a consumer version of a Miller.

It should be OK for home use and metals up to 1/8" thick.

The basic difference in a MIG and an ARC welder is that the MIG uses an inert gas as the flux which leaves a cleaner weld with no slag. The ARC uses a flux on the stick which leaves slag that must be cleaned up.

I think a nice mig is the way to go, but my dad who is a professional welder only deals with stick welders..........I think hes just old school

Then have an exhaust shop do it,

no need in buying a cheap welder.

Money shouldnt be held back on tools.

if your going to buy a welder nowadays yes it should be a mig, because if you decide you ever want to weld thjings to your car like a roll bar or whatevr arc welding is not allowed anymore, plus for an inexperianced welder its better to have the mig, like your dad i always used an arc welder but in the 80,s nhra said no more have to be mig/tig. but if for only one thing save the money go to muffler shop
