Thumbs down Dammit! Broke my 1/2" torque wrench torquing the heald bolts!

Went to give the ARP head bolts a final backout and re-torque to 75 ft/lbs and the directional switch broke on my Craftsman 1/2" torque wrench. Now it spins freely in both directions and doesn't lock at all. Plus it looks like hydrolic fluid leaked out. So I had to use my backup 3/8".

Does Sears do replacements on torque wrenches or on just standard tools?

IMO i would use a much better torque wrench when doing all the crucial bolts on an engine.

I use a Snap-On 3/8" torque wrench. I like it alot because it is digtial and will tell you when you are getting close by vibrating and then beeping when you are at your set spec.
I guess the real reason i use it is for piece of mind - i know its nearly dead on and have the snap-on rep spec it every year.

Snap on and Mac are supposed to be the industries best tools, most prefer snap on but all of the tools are very expensive. You normally get what you paid for with tools.

That being said I had to replace a set of craftsman professional grade needle nose pliers once and it cost me just under $30 with tax. I think with craftsman it normally depends on how much its used before it will break, don't use my tools from them often and haven't had much problems with mine.

Craftsman is junk, use to be the best bang for your buck when they were trying to build a rep for entry level professionals. Now they are garbage. There professional line is what there basic was about 20 years ago but for the premium it falls short compared to SnapOn/MAC/Matco. Get SnapOn or Blue Point if you need cheaper stuff. Besides the SnapOn truck is always around M-F all you need to do is get his number from the website he will meet you whereever, sometimes come to your casa if he can. A+ customer service and I think they are still made in America. Back on subject look into CDI torque wrenches, exact same as the SnapOns just not branded. Its what we use for aviation maintenance in the USMC.

Invest in a nice set from MAC/Matco/Snap-on. They are well worth the money, trust me.

If you bought craftsman vice grips made in china, they aren't craftsman.. Maybe our evolv line? Green? They are made in china for people who don't want or need American quality. Almost all our handtools are made in America, I can almost count on my two hands how many hand tools we make that aren't... Beam style torques have a lifetime, digitork and microtork are one year, our electronic ones are 90 day warranty, but if you come in, there is a 50/50 chance they will just give you a new one. Especially if you say you thougt it was lifetime...

Call craftsman sh** if you want but if a handtool under our warranty doesn't satisfy you for ANY reason, we replace it. How many of you mechanics are still waiting on snap on to replace your tools? If you owe the driver or if your wanting to buy, he's all over you, but the minute your not, where is he? I have tons of customers in the same situation, most only use snap on for their specialty tools anymore...

I believe Craftsmans' warranty is only a one time use now, where as Snap on is lifetime. The dealer stopped by my house once, noticed an old beat up 30 year old screwdriver of my dads which just happened to be snap on, and replaced the end. Same with my box which is from the 70s, and has had half the slides replaced recently. Most but not all of Snap On's stuff is made in the USA, with one of their main plants in Kenosha Iowa. Their ratchets are by far my favorite, but I don't regret anything I've bought from them.

My only tip I can give is buy the tools outright, don't get sucked into a weekly payment.

This whole damn paragraph makes no ******* sense whatsoever. But I'll tell you what makes sense, the fact that the pair of Craftsman vice grips that I just bought say "made in CHINA!"

Sorry you can't read, yea yours are Chinese, but it's one of the few, most still are made by danaher here in America, all craftsman ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, most pliers, only the locking pliers aren't. Those tiny precision pliers are Chinese. Our wrenches and ratcheting wrenches are all still American made. All drill bits are American made, many of our blades are American or Swiss...

And the forever warranty is just that, unlimited replacements, forever. Not one time use.

Edit: I'm trying to help you get a replacement torque wrench and your mad? Damn..
