Parts cleaning

Anyone here have any good ideas for a DIY parts cleaner? I have a few cranks and piston sets that are covered in baked on oil

Acetone and atf mixed together. Let it soak and it should come out brand new.

^^This.^^

I've also had great success with Chem-dip. It's available at most Walmarts & auto parts stores.

It doesn't eat aluminum?

It's made for cleaning carbs. On the chem-dip can it says not to soak coated aluminum parts longer than 4hrs. But you'll be surprised how much build up it removes in under 30 minutes. I use a old toothbrush to scrub in the tight spots & heavy build areas.

What's the mix of acetone and ATF?

Believe it or not but pinesol works great too. I let my pistons soak in it for a couple days and they were very easy to clean

Don't waste your time with anything, but the Berryman chem-dip. I use it to clean all my parts. It even removes the carbon deposits on intake/exhaust valves and pistons!

I've heard great things on the acetone and ATF. (50/50 mix) It is a old school penetrant remedy.

Here is an interesting read on it..
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=20131.0

"I got the April/May edition of Machinist's Workshop magazine yesterday.
Another very talented Lloyd did an interesting test of penetrating oils where he measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Get the issue if you want to see how he did the test. But, I thought the results he reported interesting. Maybe you will, too?

Pentrating oil / Average load / Price perfluid ounce
None / 516 pounds /
WD-40 / 238 pounds / $0.25
PB Blaster / 214 pounds / $0.35
Liquid Wrench / 127 pounds / $0.21
Kano Kroil / 106 pounds / $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix / 53 pounds / $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was mixed 1 to 1 ratio."

"ATF and Acetone does work good. ATF, Acetone, Mineral Sprits and kerosene in equal parts works even better. It was designed as a solvent at Frankford Arsenal for government firearms. Its called "Ed's Red". Fellow shooters here will know of it. Its cheap, dissolves carbon and penetrates very well."
