Default Opinions: electric impact wrench

Anybody have experience using one of the electric handheld ones? Good brands? I've seen them used in situations where a tight nut was on a bolt that was spinning and a pneumatic one was difficult to get the hose into position, with the electric one working well.

I use the Millwaukee m18 3/8" electric impact and love it. I am a fabricator so it does not see the abuse a flat rate tech my subject it too but after almost two years use, at least once a day mind you, it still rips off lug nuts.

I have an 1/2" 18v ryobi, for the money it cant be beat. If you want a beast, the 1/2" Milwaukee is the man. I havent seen one more powerful yet. I work at a very busy car dealership too, so i check out the techs tools alot. I work in parts....

Part of why I ask is because when I was changing out the steering linkage I had some nuts that were a bit stuck and the joint would spin with it using a combo wrench or socket. It was quite a pain to deal with them but the fast speed of an impact would've made them easy.

Looks like one might become a stocking stuffer this Christmas.

I second milwaukee, i use the m18 fuel brushless in 3/8 drive. It has no problem with lugnuts or anything else ive loosened so far. I actually snapped 3/8 bolt on my lawn mower with it.

Just my limited experience, but Milwaukees only weakness is the service life of the batteries,, I get > 3 years of hard use out of a 18V dewalt, I have yet to get a year on a Milwaukee drill/driver battery.

I have a 1/4 in impact hammer drill from Dewalt thats dismantled my Bike/Cars/Boat motor and just keeps going.. Drove hundreds/maybe thousands of screws building theater sets, Its a 12V model, but everyone that uses it loves it.

Milwaukee lithium-ion batteries have 2 or 3 year warranty depending on model. I don't know how old my oldest battery is, I'm guessing 3 years but they are all going strong.

I switched from Dewalt to Milwaukee and have no regrets, I absolutely long my 1/2 fuel impact.

Dont get me wrong, I like their stuff Most of my good plug in hand tools are Milwaukee (Sawsall is my favorite implement of destruction),, so I like their stuff, just that I haven't had luck with their batteries,, They only warrantee the original one, so when the second dies it was over for me, I wasn't gonna pay the $$ that was over half the cost of a new drill two batteries and the charger. Heck thats been 4 years back so very likely their battery tech has caught up //

They might have updated the warranty since your last go around- Every MILWAUKEE Battery Pack (sold with cordless product and/or as a replacement battery pack) is warranted to the original purchaser only to be free from defects in material and workmanship

I have the Kobalt electric 1/2 inch impact and it works really well. I used it to completely disassemble an lq4 motor on stand with no problem. The crank bolt gave a little bit of issue but that was it

I third the Kobalt 24v max. Last year around black Friday they had a kit with the 1/2, 3/8, charger, and 4.0 battery for $220 shipped. Smoking deal! I really wanted the Milwaukee 1/2", but at a cheaper price plus a free 3/8 (for those harder to reach places) I used the money saved to buy a milwaukee M12 wrench.

Another happy Kobalt 24v user here. The 1/2” impact was able to remove some seriously rusty 50 year old suspension bolts and the 1/4” drive is great for assembling/disassembling the smaller stuff. Reasonably priced too.

Just recently picked up a Rigid 1/2" brushless impact wrench and haven't used it on anything yet! I played around with some lag bolts and its definitely got some power and being cordless is a huge plus, as dragging out the old compressor hose and impact was always a pain. I do like that it has an automatic setting as well that torques the bolt and stops right before the "impact" motion would start, so you dont tear up threads when assembling. Came with a 4AH battery and charger for $150, thought it was a good buy.

Good to hear. I have been looking at those Kobalt electric impacts and have been hesitant to pull the trigger. Now that I have heard others experiences on these, I think you and others have made my decision for me.
