Default why is the crank pulley so hard to get off.

broke my crank pulley puller trying to get it off. It was one of those special triangle pullers that the one of the members here ws selling. I was hoping it would do better then it did. the middle bolt or nut needed to be hardened as it stripped the threads or pressed then and jammed up, when i backed it out the bolt broke off in the nut. Now im going to have to cut the nut off and weld another one on there and try to modify the crappy thing to work.
crank is about 75% off

Some are a beast, some pop right off. Luck of the draw, I guess

I broke two Autozone 3-jaw pullers, and finally bought a Craftsman version -- haven't ever broke it or stripped the bolt, and I've done at least 30-40 pulley swaps with it.

For the ASP pulleys, I use a harmonic balancer puller and thread the bolts into the ring. Better than pulling on the edge of the pulley and tearing the elastomer ring.

Default Sears 3 Jaw Puller Works Great

Buy the Sears brand puller. I have used it on many engines. It works as an inside or outside puller and is very universal. Be sure to lubricate the threads well when using any puller.

There is no key on the crank of the LSx engine so it has to be a tight fit to keep from rotating on the crank. It is not tight enough on the early LS2 engines in Corvettes and is coming off the crank under high RPM!

Rented a good 3 jaw puller from a rental center. I imagine a good one would cost better than $140, dont know wasnt about to buy it when it was 10 to rent for the day. But you need to make sure its a good heavy duty 3 jaw puller, not some lightweight wanna be tool. My came off no problem, was 99 w/74k at the time. Use a socket for a spacer instead of letting the post fek up your threads. You also need to make sure it staright and not going in crooked. The idea is to pull directly centered, no angle.

this is the best puller you can find for gen III engines
very stout and compact, has pins holding the jaws in so you can break it down quickly.
long rods bottom out in the bolt hole so you wont mess up the crank threads

Thanks one question though what are the PR for that come with the kit. Does this use the bolt to pull off the pulley like the other pullers?

PR????

there are 3 casings inside the spokes of the dampner. This grabs on to them 3, has a rod that slides into the crank, and the bolt pushes on that and pulls her right off. I am still ion shock at how smooth it threads. Feels like it's on bearings but it is jsut threads!

these pushrods fit in the pulley bolt hole and give the puller something to push against.

If it makes you feel any better, my pulley broke during my cam swap last weekend. I had never seen anything like that before, but at least that bastard was really close to popping off when it broke.

That snap-on puller works great but the the problem I had with it is the push rod looking extensions where too short and the long one was too long. I had to jerry rig it.

AND the OTC has a 3/8 square drive in the middle of the bolt so you dont have to use a socket for more clearence.
