What kind of welder draws 120 amps at 230 volts? That sounds really high.

#2 THHN would work, #1 THHN would be better (3 conductors, plus a #6 ground). "Wiring a House (for Pros, by Pros), by Rex Caldwell, is a good book to get for your wiring need.

For those who wonder, big TIG machines, like a sycrowave 350, can pull 120 amp, 240 volts.

wires THW,THHW, TW FOR A TIP WORK AREA, UN-AC'd: #1 for 120A. i just pulled out a quick guide and looked. ground prob as Silver LT says. If you have a industrial electrical supply house nearby, just get one of their catalogs for future ref. Usually, the formula tables are reprinted in the back pages of a lot of them. catalog usually free.

I went to home depot and it was the only stuff available was the 3wire exterior stuff i think it was good to 100 amps. My Iron Man 210 only pulls 50amps or so maybe even less. The problem is that this wire is ******* expensive, like 2.99 a foot I think, If your talking the stuff for more amperage get ready to pay out the *** for it.

For a 200 amp service, my dad (master electrician) only uses 2/0 or 1/0 depends on the run, for a 100 amp service #2 or larger.
