Checking Ohm's with Multimeter

I need to check the ohms on the purple signal wire from the fuel level sender and found this multimeter at a friends but there are no directions for it and we aren't sure how to do it. It has a black and red lead as well. Can anyone explain to me the proper way to check the wire using this tool? Want to make sure I get it right. Thanks!

turn the knob to the right till you get to the ohm sign. plug the black lead into the COM port and the red into the far left port. ps it also has a ohm sign on it to. then apply the leads to either side of the wire or circuit you are wishing to ohm

So both leads touch the same wire then I should get the reading? Or does one touch the wire and the other elsewhere? Thanks again.

ok if you put the leads together you should get a reading of zero meaning zero resistance so when you are ohming a wire you are trying to measure the resistance thru the wire so yes on the same wire. I get from your thread you have a stuck or bad fuel gauge sender you will have to get the pump assy out of your car if you havent already done so to be able to move the float arm up and down doing this you will be able to measure the resistance float arm give you your fuel level

yeah I have the entire assembly out and will be moving the float to get the readings but wanted to make sure I was using the meter right so if there is no reading I can rule out operator error. Thanks!

no prob hopefully your float is just stuck!
