Should we make a list of suggested tools?
I know everytime I do something to the car, I end up making at least one trip to AutoZone or Advance Auto.
IMO for starters...
Rhino ramps
Decent socket set
RTV
Anti-seize
Torque wrench
set of wobble bars

combination wrenches (gear wrenches if you are serious about getting done quick). jack, jackstands, if you have an air compressor then an air rachet and impact will be worth their weight due to the speed you can do things with them.

Dremel tool!
Forgot to mention a 24mm impact socket. REALLY handy for those crank bolts and for some reason they just don't seem to come in any socket sets!
Hey Tony, how about makin this thread sticky?

Jackstands are a MUST!!!
PB Blaster, some brake cleaner, dielectric grease (makes pulling hard to get to plug wires off much easier!) oil filter wrench, sealable drain pan, bag of speedy dry, TORX screwdrivers, flouresent droplight, spark plug socket with built in universal joint, inexpensive gear oil pump (can be had for under $10), multimeter, Lisle fuel disconnect tool (for that LS6 swap), a few prybars, latex and Mechanix gloves, torque-angle meter for that ASP pully swap.... and a whole lot more!
And beer. Can't spend an entire 100 degree day laying under a car without BEER!!! (and a creeper)

How about for the easy stuff. A big *** C clamp for doing brakes (or equivalent.) A multimeter can save you hours of frustration. Fuel line disconnect tool for swapping injectors, etc.

Swivel based 5/8ths and 13/16ths plug sockets, palm and/or stubby ratchets.
Fuel removal tool is nice, bu t I just flipped it all upside down and did it right there without disconnecting a thing to change injectors and just flipped it up and out of the way for the LS6 intake swap.
There are wayyyy too many "special" tools I have that you don't thank the maker for until you are in a precarious position.

How often do you use a timing light on an LS1? I know there might be cases where I guess it could come along, but none that I can think of offhand... at least without some serious alteration.

Dremel is an actual brand. Craftsman also makes a similar rotary tool called RTX.
