Default FS: 1999 Cobra w/402 LS2/3 track day car

Year: 1999
Make: Ford
Model: Mustang
Price: $14500
Mileage: 34000
Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing
Location (State): MI
Color: Black
Transmission: Manual
Drivetrain: Rear Wheel Drive

I’ve owned the car since new in April 1999. Used as a summer car until 2005 and then gradually modified for track days. Although a Michigan car, it was never winter driven. In 2009 I took the car off the road, sold the motor and installed an LS2/3. I’ve been tracking it this way since 2012 at a rate of 1~2 events per year. During the spring of 2015 I upgraded the rear suspension with Delrin and installed 13” rotors. I have roughly 3 sessions on those parts.

What the car is:
  • Fast, actually stupid fast.
  • Very reliable. While some may be “wrenching” in the paddock I‘m generally relaxing between sessions.
  • I feel the car is at it’s max performance, the next step is aero, huge tires and I am not going there.
What the car is not:
  • Not a show car.
  • Not a cruiser. With no A/C it can get hot. It does retain the factory vent fan.
  • No airbags and no factory seat belts thus no factory crash performance. You make your own decisions here…
  • I don’t drive it on the street because the tags are expired. I trailer the car to all events.
List of mods:
Suspension
  • Full Maximum Motorsport front coil-over/k-member suspension/bumpsteer kit/camber plates
  • 350lbs springs/2003 Cobra struts
  • 2000 Cobra R Brembo 4 piston retrofit in front
  • Full Tilt Boogie Racing IRS upgrade (Delring everywhere)
  • MM 550lbs coil over springs/2003 Cobra shocks in the back
  • Full Tilt Boogie Racing 13” rear brake upgrade, new cross axis joints and Kenny Brown bumpsteer kit
  • Hawk Blue pads all around
  • MM Sub-frame connectors
  • The car sits approximately 1 inch below factory ride height

Interior/exterior
  • Recaro Sport seats
  • Schroth Harness
  • 6 point roll bar
  • Relocated battery
  • No carpeting, no a/c but venting fan was retained
  • Vented carbon fiber skin hood
  • Fully boxed radiator (The car never overheats. Never.)
As I indicated above it is not a show car. It does have one ding on the passenger side and the paint is peeling on the front fascia from a poorly done paint job back in 2005. If the peeling paint is a show stopper for you I can have the fascia painted properly but since the car is 16 years old it should be completely repainted. Just my opinion.

Powertrain/drivetrain
  • New LS2 block with LS3 heads, 4” Callies forged crank, 402 cubic inches or 6.6L
  • Ford EEC-V computer and sensors + SCT chip. Yes, I guess in theory, you could run diagnostics on the engine.
  • 470rwhp, 440ft-lbs torque
  • Runs on 93 octane
  • ARE hybrid dry sump system, 3 gallon oil tank ( you only fill it with 6~7 quarts)
  • C&R oil to water heat exchanger
  • 6 speed 2003 Cobra T56 transmission with LS1 input shaft and Quick Time steel bellhousing. Completely rebuilt by Liberty Gears in Taylor, MI.
  • Aluminum driveshaft with 1350 U-joints
  • GKN upgraded half shafts
  • 3.73 gears with Tru-Track differential and diff cooler with Tilton pump
  • Side exhaust, 1 ¾” headers, ceramic coated
I built the motor in 2010-11. It has roughly 1,000 miles and has been very reliable. I had a build thread on LS1tech dot com. You can find it here. I blueprinted the motor and have the numbers.

The dry sump uses a belt driven 2 stage scavenge pump and the factory oil pump for the pressure side. This system has been proven for many years in racing and I believe was used in an older race series many years ago as a way to circumvent some of the rules. The scavenge pump is mounted in the LS1 A/C location and runs on a very reliable serpentine belt with the factory A/C tensioner. So very little risk of a “thrown belt”.

Mileage: 34,000 miles
The title has been clear since 2002.

You can find all sorts of 1999~2001 Mustang GT and Cobras for less than 10k… and a lot of mileage on the odometer. But none will behave like this one on track. The car is modified but was not “butchered up”.

The car is located in Farmington, MI. I can deliver the car within a reasonable distance.
