Need help with 97 LT1 that won't start

I have a 97 Camaro with 122,000 miles on it. The car turned off on me as I was driving it and after many tries turned back on. Two days later the car just wouldn't start. Within the last two years I have replaced the fuel pump, starter, and distributor. So I replaced the ignition control module, ignition coil, crankshaft sensor, and distributor. Before connecting the radiator, water pump, and air intake I tried starting the car to see if it would start. It didn't start. So I took the distributor off to make sure I put it on correctly, I put it on and the car started after a couple tries. So I hooked everything else back on and the car didn't start anymore!:bang::bang:

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on why my car won't start? Thanks

sounds like it is your opti spark again if it worked for a little after just messing with it. i would check fuel pressure and spark first, those are both pretty simple.

Make sure all the grounds are hooked up

The opti is what he just replaced. Could it be a sensor?

he said within 2 years, it would not surprise me too much if an opti went out in 6 months.

I replaced the opti both about two years ago and today, in response to the car turning off on me and not wanting to start. Since I just replaced the opti, ignition control module, ignition coil, and crankshaft position sensor, I wonder if there is any sensor or other electrical component that might be causing this.

If your replacing the opti with the cheap auto zone u will replace every year or so. Get a genuine GM from the dealer

Where are you located. I can take a look at it for you if you are local...

I am located in the Van Nuys/ San Fernando area... Hope that's local enough!

The one I put on two years ago was an OE one from GM. The one I put on yesterday was a Dynaspark.

It's far, but if you hook me up with some gas money, I can try to make it out there this weekend if you haven't figured out the problem by then.

Will it crank at all?

Check the plug wires for damage. Especially the coil wire. It could also be a bad opti harness. Where did you buy that ICM from?

And just to be sure, your SECURITY light isn't on, is it?

It won't crank. I got the ICM from Auto Zone

My service engine soon light isn't on either

DId you check the fuel filter? see if that is clogged? Does it try to turn over but won't start?

kornerz Sep 8, 2010 11:26 AM

fill it up with 91 and throw it off a cliff! jk. start withe the basics, test batt voltage, clean the terminals, check for fuel pressure and spark.

If car won't crank check: battery posts, ignition switch, make sure your getting power to the starter, and also the neutral safety switch. Let me know if u need help on checking anything else.

security light? need to bypass that silly key pellet ;)

Wicked94Z Sep 12, 2010 05:38 AM

could be the theft deterrent relay as well, if you hear a click from the ignition switch and it's not cranking it's probably the TDR. Bypassing that is an easy one as well.
