Keep in mind that while the sniffer test would be gone, the visual test is still in place. I think typically long tubes with cats pass the sniffer, but fail on visual anyways.

Im interested in the implications of any kind of tune or flash and what the OBDII test will actually be scanning for. I still havent bought an f body yet and Im waiting to see if maybe a 98 WS6 would be the better option given this change. If anyone can chime in about the effect this has on vehicles with a flash or tune, please do.

Right now the BAR is beta testing the DAD devices (Data Acquistion Devices) to try and find out which ones will be approved for smog stations. From what I've heard the DAD implementation has been pushed back to the end of 2014. No one is going to know for sure if the new DAD devices will be able to detect custom PCM tunes and fail smog until the devices are actually in the hands of smog techs and they are done with beta testing.

Not exactly the update I was hoping to hear, but Im definitely glad to be updated on it. Thanks for the info. I wonder if theyre just going to keep pushing it back so that they never have to implement it at all?

Ironic how the "DAD" bullshit reminds one a lot of "BIG BROTHER". I have to smog mine very soon. I was gonna do it yesterday but a check engine light came on on the way back from work...... Love it. Once that is taken care of I'm hoping I can get a smog. I have a BBK intake which sticks out like a white boy at an E-40 concert. It has no carb. approval stamp. However, it does keep the EGR so I'm hoping that I can find a smog tech who doesn't have the mind of a sheep and who will pass it anyways. Then hopefully in a few years I can move to Oregon. I will make damn sure to stop at the Cali/Oregon border and take the biggest, most taco bell fueled dump behind on this worthless state's land on my way out.

I found this from the company that makes the dad devices. Maybe someone wants to take the plung and buy one and see if tunes fail? If so we should get these into the hands of tuners and maybe find a way to trick the test?

The sniffer is not going away as of the last that I read on the BAR site, only going to be used at the discretion of the smog tech.

I've contacted a few of the new DAD manufacturers, and they refuse to go into detail about what kind of data it can read. Out of the 3 I've contacted, one only mentioned that the system has fraud and tampering prevention available. Beyond that, nothing. The BAR has already approve 2 or 3 devices which will go into public beta testing in a couple months.

I still don't think this will end well. Worst comes to worst, I put the car back to stock, sell it, and move on to another project that is pre-1976.

Oh, come on now, nothing involving high performance cars, motorcycles, or firearms is going to end well in the PRK.

What is DAD an acronym for?

Meh, glad I sold my cars and moved to Indiana in November. No smog laws in my area . When I sold my ws6 tho, the usual smog shop I went to said they couldn't do it and it had to be done at a star certified, and that was just me doing it on my own accord to get the paper to sell.

Wasn't hard tho, just walked into a place, asked them how much a "smog without the car here" would cost, gave them my registration and they had it ready after a couple hours.

New update from the BAR, it appears the DAD beta testing is on hold, will be interesting to see if the DAD will make it out to all the smog shops by the end of this year. My wager is no.

Does anyone know a trusted smog tech in the Sacramento area? If so please PM me, looking to pick up a 02 WS6 from out of state with longtubes and a texas speed MS4 cam. I know it won't pass, but I'd really like to get it, and need help. Thank you!

The 243 heads wont pass the visual since theyre dont have an EO# I believe. The extra stroke should be fine because they cant see it. The cam depends on what the numbers for it are. I think all of them can pass the sniffer test, just the visual would be difficult to get by.
