CA SMOG legal exhaust
I have a 1998 z28 and I want to do a LT setup with cats and a true dual axle dump. How Can I run long tubes with cats and pass a smog inspection here in California?

legally? you cant. You have to get a smog guy. The only cats that are truly legal are the stock ones. You'd have to have a pretty dumb smog tech to not notice long tube headers and after market cats.

The issue is that the cats are purposely close to the engine for quick light off on startup. Long tubes move them farther away, so more pollution, hence, not legal. You can run shorties if they have CARB certs. Otherwise you have to swap everything back to stock every two years or have "a guy."

My question is how likely is it that the inspector is going to get down on and actually look under the car? I've never seem them do that but maybe it's because they can see that it's got stock manifolds. I'm thinking about trying it to see if it'll work, would rather do that than run some shitty shorty header setup.

Go ahead and roll the dice if you are feeling lucky. LT headers move the CATS back so they don't light off as well which in itself will likely fail the tail pipe portion of test
You would need to find a shop who, for a $ donation (cash), "may" look the other way in terms of "visual" test but without using a "donor" car to actually plug in and test tail pipe...LT's with CATS will likely fail
If you get a "STAR" test notice, forget about even trying. Those guys play by the book. BAR actually sends out "test" undercover cars to confirm a shop does test procedures right. Shops lose their license and get hit with a heavy fine. The days of "pay a guy" are far and few between now in CA
