how do 555r's handle?

how are the nitto 555r's handling-wise? would they be any better/worse than a normal street tire for autox? do they have a thinner sidewall than street tires?

i'm looking for a tire that will hook really well on the street but still be good for turning. i have 16x8's so i cant run the 555 IIR which is meant for road racing.

R's or DR's?

I was running 18" DR's all around for a while and really like it a lot.

Just in warm temp though.

In my experience the corner almost as bad as my sumitomos did. Mine had a really soft sidewall that would lean the car in a corner. In a straight line they did really well even in rain. Anything below 70 degress though will not hold traction. Look at the new Kumo Ecsta XS.

yeah, you need to get a little more sideways. two turnin two burnin. lol . good 'shop then.

i'll do some drifting when the new tires come in. try to get some pictures.

looking into the firestone wide ovals now since they have a decent sidewall. the nittos sound great for straight line but i like turning and i'd like to have a tire that sticks ok almost all year round(plan on buying winter tires next season)

my buddy has the 555 extreme's on his ss and loves them, they hook good and he can toss it into a coner and it acts like its on rails!

therealcreeper Feb 19, 2009 01:16 PM

yeah some people say they handle great, others say the sidewall is too thin. so difficult.

I just bought the new Nitto NT05s...i don't have them yet, but they got good reviews...200 thread wear, so they should be pretty sticky?

therealcreeper Feb 19, 2009 02:41 PM

they look pretty sick, too bad they don't come in my size either though

shaun Feb 19, 2009 08:59 PM

the regular 555 nittos handle really well.
i had them on a 91 lx stang with the 5 lug swap and 17in cobra wheels and that thing handled very well.
the tires have a softer compound so there sticky.
i need new tires and im going with the nittos all around and ill have a spare set of wheels with some m/t's for the track.

i can't find the 555's anywhere. all i can find are the 555r's. can anyone point me in the right direction? anyone else have experience with the 555r's?

Ryanmgaspard Feb 22, 2009 07:58 PM

555R are street drag radials and they hook up really well but mine leaned fairly well in corners. good overall tire though for straight line

therealcreeper Feb 22, 2009 08:44 PM

yeah i've had some people tell me they handle great, others say the sidewall's kinda flimsy. do you know how much pressure you were running with em?

02white6.0 Feb 22, 2009 09:09 PM

I had the 555RII's on my old car and they hooked pretty good and handled well. IMO, it all depends on your driving habits and how much you drive the car to decide a tire.

therealcreeper Feb 22, 2009 09:49 PM

basically the 555r is the only tire i've found that people will agree hooks(not including other dr's). everything else people suggest either doesn't come in my size, or 10 other people claim it sucks. the goodyear is the only other thing i've found. pretty pricey but it may be worth it in the long run.

I run the 555r tire and they hook okay, they corner okay with air in them although I don't AutoX just going around freeway ramps kinda fast. I can say they suck in the rain though, your signature picture happened to me doing 75 mph on a loopy turn on a freeway. I don't screw around in the rain or go around corners fast the tires just don't like it. I can say the tread wear is good and I've put plenty of miles on them.

You can't have the best of both worlds, if you want to hook in one direction then get a DR, if you want to corner then get a thick side wall tire.

Which Goodyear tire are you talking about?

therealcreeper Feb 22, 2009 10:14 PM

the GS-D3

and yeah i know. the 555RII would be almost perfect since it's the coumpound of a 555r with a stiffer sidewall but i can't get them in my size. i just want something that won't spin so bad my car short shifts because it hits redline, but also corners decently. i don't really care about road noise and i only need it to last ~10k miles.
