What advantages of running a taller tire??
Say a 28 instead of a 26.5. Is it just for more mph/rpm or do you gain more traction from a larger tire as well? Also, what are the pros/cons with a 10.5 to a 11.5 width tire. I am trying to find out if the 26.5 is what I need or am I better off with a larger/wider slick. Not so much for mph for trapping but for hooking. Thanks for the help.

Larger diameter will have a slightly larger contact patch on the ground. Most people up the diameter to change the overall gearing ratio. Lets say you have 4.30 gears and are hitting the rpm limiter in 4th gear before you cross the finish line with 26" tires. If you go up to 28" tires, you effectively reduce that 4.30 ratio and can carry more mph with the same rpm.
I would not recommend upping tire diameter until you need it. If you can hook on 26s and finish in 4th gear, you are just fine as-is. On the 4th gen f-body, figure you'll need around 128-130 mph trap speeds and 4.10 gears to use 28s.

at the end of the day, the taller, wider tire will always hook better. not just from the wider footprint, but because the increased flex of the taller sidewall cushions the torque shock on the launch. and with the combo in your sig and a 6spd, you will need all of the traction you can get. a smaller tire may hook your car on a well prepped track, but spin like hell on a marginal track. it's always better to have more tire and not need it than to not have enough.
the key to being fast on a larger tire is to run as much tire pressure as you can and still hook.

On a street tire you'll have a softer ride... If your talking about a DR or full slick you'll get a better contact patch especially if you run the right tire pressure, the lower the pressure the more contact you will get (obviously there are exceptions here). At the track I'd go with a taller tire over a wider tire simply because of weight benefits as well as gearing. What size wheel are you running?
