Which are better for hooking up? i know the price difference is alot between them

What brand? My 275/40/17 MT's I had and now 255/50/16 MT's hook way better than my Nitto 315/35/17 DR's that I use on the street. MT's don't take as much heat to get them to stick well, the Nitto requires a huge burnout which costs the life of them. But typically a larger size in the same brand should hook better due to a larger contact patch. So now I use 315 Nitto DR's for the street only and have a set of 255/50/16 MT's on stock Z28 snowflakes for the track.

he may be asking, same tires, just different size? which means that if you had nittos in both those sizes, one would think that the larger width would make it hook better. im sure someone on here has tested this. i honestly could car less. the wider rear tire is good reason enough.

the 315s will hook better. because they weigh more and will have to be put on a wider wheel, more weight=harder to spin. that coupled with additional width means more traction

a 315 is usually overkill and not necessary anyway. 275's with M/T's should hook great unless you have a 600+hp monster or sum ****...

GM hightech ran a 94 formula into low 11's with the stock size tire on a 16 inch rim with hoosiers...it had no traction problems and it did a wheelstand...

the 315 is 3 pounds heavier, so 9 pounds each wheel when rotating mass is accounted for. not much but its something

the MT 255/50/16s hook well enough for most people with under 500hp...i know they did for me and they hook hard but lets face it 17x10.5 or 17x11 with some 315s look bad ***...so thats why i run them on my car now. only thing is i run the toyo proxes tq drag radial on the street now. just because they are much cheaper then the MTs and they work quite well for a high hp car on the street

oh no doubt, 315's look badass...I got em on my car. I asked about the rim size because some people shove a 315 on a 9 or 9.5 inch wide rim and that's especially pointless lol.

the 275's look great and hook great, and the 315's hook great and look amazing...basically the only real difference unless yur makin 8 second passes lol

315 nittos will look decent and buldge a little on a 9-9.5 rim because they are a little narrow but not really all that great. bulge on a 15 inch rim works because there is more sidewall to work with.

the 315 toyos i have fit and look really great on 17x10.5 ttms

who gives a damn what looks great the thread is about what will hook better. is there any real world results someone could post rather than talk about which looks better?

I have 275/40/17 Mt drag radials on my car currently, so far my best 60ft has been 1.49 on stock shocks, stock lca's, stock torque arm, stock sway bar with an untouched 3.42 10 bolt. It hooks pretty good on the street too. My only suspension mods are boxed sfc, qa1 coil overs with 300lb springs, non adj panhard bar. I say if you have a wide enough wheel go with 315s. I plan on getting 315 MT's once I get my two extra stock wheels widened to 11s.

well, we kinda already covered that...they'll both hook great.

real world examples:

My buddy's 2000 Supercharged Camaro SS has 275's on stock rims with Nitto DR's and you can't spin the tires without power braking it on the track or on the street...plenty of hook.

I have 315's on the back of my formula with an 11 inch wide rim...they also hook great. I can't spin them unless I power brake it on DR's, and only can only chirp the tires with street tires...also plenty of hook.

how is a 315 "better" when you won't be able to break loose a 275 with a good tire?
315's have a higher tolerance for HP, but you can easily get 100% perfect traction with 275's...so why spend the extra money? Looks/cosmetics is the only answer, cuz you obviously can't perform better than 100%
