315's

How good would 315's nittos fit on a 01 ws6 rim...I know a bigger rim would be better but i can't afford a new set of rims any time soon...Or would i be better off going with the stock 275's....

Stangkilr Mar 30, 2004 08:20 PM

You can do it, I have 315's on my 9.5's and they are awesome!

SLO POK 98 Mar 30, 2004 10:18 PM

I know alot of 03 Cobra people smashing 315s on their cars. It will work, might just bow out alittle more than your 275s you have now.

Shinkaze Mar 31, 2004 10:06 AM

The WS6 rim is 9" not 9.5". It will physically fit, I've seen it done before but I would not recomend it (and it looks goofy). First you severely deform the sidewall and bow the contact patch. That alone is enough to seriously shorten tread life and degrade handling. A 275 will have better traction, better handling and longer tread life ona 9" rim than a 315.

He is very right there! They will wear out in the middle very fast. Its kinda scary going around corners fast too but I dont do that much anyways thats why I like mine.

I have 315's on my 9.5" WS6 rims. That is the minimum rim width allowed for them. You will lose about 1/2" of tread contact on the outer edges over using an 11" rim. But you still end up with ~1" more tire on the ground than with 275s. The only issue I would worry about is the low pressure you'll run the Nittos at on the track. At 30-32 psi my GSCs are flat all the way across. But when you drop that to say 20 psi on the Nittos for racing, then the middle of the tread might lift. Which should not happen with 275s....

WS6 rims are 9" not 9.5", as are Camaro SS rims(same holds true for the 10 spoke SS rims). ZR1 front 17"s and some standard C4 rims are 9.5" though(there also was a brief run of 17x8"s on the vette and 16x8"s on the convertible SS). The recomended width for a 315 tire is 10.5"-12" This gives you an idea of recomended rim to tire widths.

http://kennybrown.com/mspwheelstires.htm

FWIW though there is a 315 Goodyear tire that is recomended for a 9" rim... of course it's a truck tire with an 80 series sidewall.

Now a 315 will hold air on 9" rim, I've seen it done, and I personally find it rather comical that a person would do that since it's the domestic equivalant of ricing a car out. Since the tire is deformed and can no longer lay the tread patch down flat it is not stabalizing the belts and thus has less traction than a smaller 275. This bowed sidewall condition greatly shortens tread life, causes belt speration and blistering and degrades performance. Why would you do a mod to try and look fast that intriniscly degrades the performance of your ride?

At any rate, if you are going to do it, do it right. Buy a cheap set of ZR1 rims with 11"s in the back. That's what I've run for 5 years now and you actually get the performance to back up the look.

Now if you just want to keep the look of the WS6 rim you can also jsut have the 17x9" WS6 rim widened.

I think you should do whatever you want to do with your car,and if you like it ,then that's all that matters.
I have run 315/35/17 Nitto drag radials on my stock ZR1 wheels and personally ,i dont care if anyone thinks it looks RICED OUT. I did not do it for anyone but myself. I also did not run into any shortened tread life or dangerous handling problems.
I have had BFG DR's and Nitto DR's in the stock size along with the 315's.Sorry bud the 275's and the 315's lasted the same amount of miles and worked equally as well at the track and on the street on my nitrous car with a big stall on a lowered suspension.
I do agree that the side walls do bow out ,but i like the added width you see from behind the car, more than i dislike the look of the sidewall from the side.
Just do your own thing.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!

When will you people listen! :bang: Manufacturer's have recommendations for a reason. Man if you were driving next to me and had a blow out because you where so friggin ignorant and crammed a wrong tire on a wrong wheel and crashed I'd sue your ass from here to hallelujah. I still can't beleive that there are sleasy enough tire shops still doing this!

Its not that it looks riced out.

His point was that it was RICE.

Rice = doing something to your car for the impression of performance when it doesn't really help or might detract from the purpose: i.e. going fast!

Bingo! I have run ~6 pairs of 315/35 R17s on my 17"x11" ZR1 rims for the last 5 years, great combo. Putting them on a 9" rim is RICE because you're trying to make the car look fast when really it performs worse. Since the tire neither lays properly flat, nor is the sidewall stabilized you kill both straight line and cornering performance, A proper match of rim width to tire width will allways perform better than a mismatched set.

This is like putting a 5" exhaust tip on a stock Honda Civic, only worse because this actually harms performance.

Kudo's to Adam...
Good advice and yes...stay away from the smaller rim. I understand the $$ factor VS. what you desire however, your safety and the 'real' performance of your ride is more important than any 'look.'

There are always folks wanting the factory WS-6 rims. Sell what ya have and buy a set of the ZR-1's in 17x11. You'll come out the same and have a better all around deal.

P.S. Adam...
Your car looks Bad Ass with the painted ZR's. Give's it a No Bull appearance and super stance. GOOD JOB!

fwiw I've seen 315 nittos on stock ws6 rims and the sidewall was not bulging out nor did it look ghetto. You really had to look closely to see if it was a 315 tire. In addition the 315 Nitto is not much wider than the 275.

Other tires may be different however. I know the BFG's are A LOT wider.

Ryan02SS Apr 3, 2004 08:41 PM

The Nitto 555R Drag Radial 315 is not a true size 315 in the sense more like a 285 width. Compare a 315 GY GSD3 with a 315 Nitto 555R and a 285 GY GSD3 and you'll find the Nitto is exactly the same as the 285 GSD3. The Nitto's will work on the stock 9" rims but don't go with any other companies 315! Almost all the 03 Cobra guys are going to 315 Nitto's as they have proven to hook better without any problems.

NBM~01~WS6 Apr 3, 2004 11:13 PM

Ya that is what my buddy at the tire place told me....That the nittos run small and the 315 will fit on my stock rim.....I need to decide in the next week or so if i want the nittos or bfgs..with the bfg's i will go with the 275 and if i decide to go with the nittos i'm not sure what size to go with...

Got Me SOM Apr 4, 2004 10:55 AM

if you drive your car on the street the bfg's won't last very long. 5,000 miles max

I like my Nittos. I had to drive the car in the rain and the car actually wasn't all over the place.
go 315 nitto.
