Race Star rims on a daily driver?

My car isn't really a daily driver, but I do drive it 3-5 times a week and put a good 60-100 miles on it a week. So it sees the street.

My question is, does anyone with Race Star wheels use them on the street?

I ask, because I'm thinking of swapping to them because they are really light, and really a great looking rim. But, I would want to run them all the time, because they have the look I want and come in sizes I can live with for the drag radials I'd like to run.

Also, while I like the stock WS6 02 wheels, I want more meat in the back, but I don't want to pay for Fikse or CCW to get the size, weight, and look I want. TT2s, TTM, ZR1 DDs, and other 17x10.5/11 wheels do nothing for me, unfortunately. I've also thought about going Z06 Spyders and running a big brake kit, but I'm not so sure on that either.

So, that leaves me with something like Race Star.

The setup I'm thinking of is a 17x9.5 up front to run a 275/40-17 tire and a 15x10 in rear with either a 275/50R15 or 325/50R17 drag radial back there.

One downside to the 325/50 is the ABS/TCS will be inoperable due to the 26/28" tire heights front and rear. I could run the 275/50 and it'd work well on the 15x10, but it's not much wider than a 275/40-17 I could put on the stock wheels.

The other downside that I could probably live with is the lack of ABS. For a street driven car, that might be an issue? Anyone have any thoughts/experience on that?

My other thought/question is the tire. I'd run a Nitto NT555R vs Mickey Thompson ET Street - just for the safety and streetability. But I do have a question of how safe a tire like a 325/50 would be in traffic and handling? I would imagine it'd be pretty squirrelly.

Does anyone have any experience driving such a big tire with such massive sidewalls on the street? How does it hold up/handle?

I also realize I'll probably need 4.10s with 28" tall tires to have equivalent gearing to a 3.73 on 26" tires (which would be ideal for my setup).

Thanks!

my abs and tcs is deleted as i have a 9inch and so forth

seeing as you want to run a 15x10 rim the back im guessing you will be running some type of DR so you wont be driving in the rain much. with that said i dont have any problem with those things being deleted in my car when i drive it.

not the setup you want for handling wise tho.

JakeFusion 05-22-2013 07:47 PM

Yeah, I realize that. I'll do the Nitto NT555R just to get some mileage out of it and to have some capability to drive in the rain and on the street.

It might not hook as well as the MT or MH or BFG drags or even the Toyo or Nitto NT05R, but it'd hook better than a street tire and give me some kind of traction on the street.

And that's what I was thinking. It's not like the ABS on this car is all that sophisticated and awesome anyway.

Blackbird-WS6 05-22-2013 07:51 PM

Yea nothing has changed brake wise with or without the abs. Feels the same. And the tcs some fbodys didn even come with it from the factory and most people perfer without.

JakeFusion 05-22-2013 07:56 PM

Mine has it. And I turn it off most of the time. It just bogs the car when the tires are spinning. Hopefully the spin is a lot less with 325 DRs...

I can see a Strange S60 much sooner in my future plans :)

Blackbird-WS6 05-22-2013 07:59 PM

If theses not less spin with the 325 then something is wrong lol

Plus if you delete all that shit it looks much nicer under the hood. That alone made it worth it.

Marc 85Z28 05-22-2013 08:06 PM

325/50r15 is WAAAAY too much tire for your car. It's all wrong and will slow you down. If your car won't hook on a 275/50r15 there is something VERY wrong.

JakeFusion 05-22-2013 08:17 PM

Yeah, you're probably right.

I do think the 275/50R15 would probably work out fine for me, but it doesn't add the visual oomph of the 325s.

Anyway, would it be better to go with 15x10s and Nitto NT555R 275/50R15s or the 275/40R17 version on either my stock 17x9s or the Race Star 17x9.5s? I imagine the 15s would hook a bit better? But would that be acceptable on the street?

Blackbird-WS6 05-22-2013 09:44 PM

got any room in the budget for some billet specialties? lol

JakeFusion 05-23-2013 12:34 AM

I do. BS meets most everything I said in my initial post - cost effective, lightweight, strong, and the sizes that matter (with the Street Lites, I could do 17x9.5 and 17x11) for like $1200 or so.

The problem is I don't like the way those wheels look. But they can be ordered to fit the car perfectly and are strong and light. And the price is right.

Btw, I want to keep a 17x9.5 Front since I just bought brand new Nitto NT05s, and I like them. I have no desire to sell the stock wheels, so I'll take the tires off and reuse the NT05s on the next set. Had I known I was also looking at the CTS-V upgrade, I wouldn't have bought new tires, but I had to since I had a crack in the sidewall of the other tires I had. So I bought a new set of NT05s and no reason to waste that money since a 275/315 combo is about ideal for this car anyway.

i think you just need to figure out how much racing your going to be doing to justify the 15x10 rear rim to be worth your wild.

or just get 6 new rims. keep the fronts on all the time 17x9.5 and get 17x11 (for street use) and 15x10 (for racing) and all you need to do is just swap rears depending what you are wanting to do

lemons12 05-23-2013 12:42 AM

I did... And I won't recommend a skinny for a street car again.

What happened with my skinny VS my normal Ws6 rim when I wrecked... No thanks.

lemons12 05-23-2013 12:44 AM

Also.. If you are lowered.. 325s don't work out all too amazing.

I wanted 275s the entire time I had 325s.

what springs did you run?

lemons12 05-23-2013 12:47 AM

Bmr 1.25"

JakeFusion 05-23-2013 01:41 AM

That's a good idea. I was thinking about doing 6 wheels today. Especially considering the price. But I don't want skinnies. That's a track only thing.

Also, and I hate to say this, but I'm looking at Weld RT-S right now... more expensive but damn.

lemons12 05-23-2013 02:00 AM

I was going to sell my racestars for some RTs.. You can get a used set with tires for 1500 or so.

Kingc8r 05-23-2013 02:06 AM

Yea I'm loving the idea of Weld RTS 17/15 combo.

JakeFusion 05-23-2013 02:15 AM

I just posted a thread with Weld RT-S 17x9.5/11 combo and 18x10/11 with Part Numbers. I may go that route and get something like a Toyo R888 and have traction in a straight line and around a corner. Would end up costing pretty similar to buying 6 wheels and tires...

lemons12 05-23-2013 02:24 AM

One thing I will never ever do in my life again.. Changing rims and tires.

I despise doing it... I don't my buddies say lets go find some races tonight and it take me 30-45 minutes of time and PITA swapping to do. F that noise.

One setup that can do both.
