Default Help!!....Life of a lowered car owner

I'm wanting to go as wide as I can using the stock rims for now because I've spent every extra dime on the motor ! The car sits real low from SLP and I think the springs are saggin a touch as well . I'm currently running 275/40/17 but would like to go as wide as I can on the rear . Maybe a 305? Or 295 ? I don't have to go as wide on the front ...I could actually just leave the 275's up there . 8"inches from the floor to the exhaust tip....Help me guys please
7-71/2 from garage floor to the floor pan ...Help me guys

A 275 tire is a perfect fit on a 9 inch rim. Going to something like a 305 is not a good idea

My 2001 Camaro SS doesn't sit that low and it's stock height. My 2000 Camaro SS has 1.5" lowering springs on it and sits about like yours does.

I'll check the tire sizes and get back to you.

Johnny Redfearn,

I'm lowered a lot......2.5" basically. No issues at all. I installed 3/4" spacers to lift it back up just a tad....made it the perfect height.

12 years..........I used 315 size tires on my factory 17 x 9 rims. Kept the factory 275/40/17 up front.

Perfect in every way. Handled perfectly, tires wore perfectly even, and they look perfect. 1 minute on each side banging in the inner wheel walls where the tires barely rubbed in turns. Piece of cake.

Got about 15,000-17,000 miles out of each set......Goodyear GS-D3 were my first set........then my last 2 sets were Nitto 555 Extreme (non drag radial).

Both tires were great.

Now I have 18 x 12.5 rims.....putting my new Michelin Pilot Sports 335/30/18 on them.

The lowered car is running 245/45/R17's. The stock one doesn't have the stock wheels. It's got some base wheels from a Trans Am on it I believe. That one has 225/60/R16's on it.

I'm lowered on strano springs and I believe 9.5" rims, and I've got 275 on the front and 295 on the rear with no problems.

Johnny, While size matters in tires, compound matters more. 17" tire sizes are evaporating fast in GOOD tires. For a street driven car from the south that is looking for more traction on a budget, look at the Falken Azenis 615K in a 275/40/17. A new softer compound tire came out, the 615+ model. The older style is on clearance for $100 or less about everywhere. These tires aren't the ultimate, but they are far better than most and you can't beat the price!

All bad info, but they are tire engineers. 315s on a 9" is just dumb. Look at the tire spec and follow it. It is obvious some have no clue what handles fine is.

There is even a link at the top of the section. https://ls1tech.com/forums/wheels-ti...-5-wheels.html

Works perfectly for thousands of cars......unless the car is used for auto-cross, any aggressive handling on the street cannot hurt that combo in any way.

And who cares what tire/rim calculators say...they are dead wrong, they are for liability coverage to a company, very conservative. Our cars weren't designed for 1,000 HP either and that works perfectly also.

My decade + with 315's on 17 x 9 proves its perfectly fine to do. And there are countless cars all over South Florida and the country doing it.

Ok. I can see sneaking 1/2", under sized, but 1 1/2" to 2" is a big step under spec. Because you survived does not make it a good choice. I like things thought out and engineered.

I personally have gone through dozens of tires on this car as well. I have 23 for it right now.

I try to give good advice.

For 12 years......and again, I know dozens and dozens of cars locally that have been doing the same thing since 1998......thousands of cars do this. I have never once heard of anyone anywhere in this country having an issue with a 315 on a 17 x 9 rim.

Have you? No......that means it works perfectly. Millions and millions of miles have been done like that...

And again ....I would not do hardcore road racing like that. For normal street driving, its just as good/safe as any other combo.

Now....I get home in a week and my 18 x 12.5 rims are waiting....and my brand new Michelin Pilot Sport (102Y) tires are in 335/30/18 are waiting there for me. Thats what I've been wanting for a long time.

Oddly you have now matched the right size and rim. Enjoy!

There is alway reason engineers give limits, it is calculated and tested. If they could work properly (key word is properly) on a skinny rims and sell more, trust me they would. As mentioned it is about good information, which in my world is by design, not just throwing it at a wall and hoping it sticks. Like going onto a ramp and hoping that incorrect sized tire sticks like it should.

There are some tires with cantilevered sidewalls that allow narrow rims with a wider tire for road race classes that have rim restrictions.. Many are slicks but I think Hoosier has a couple DOT ones.. Not great street tires but they look mean..
