Default Tires Tires Tires...The Choices

So I just picked up a 02 CETA and i'm in need of tires. NITTO Drag Radials were a big hit years ago when I had my last one, but I'm not sure what the hit tire now. I want your opinion and or pics if you have any.

This car is a weekend cruiser, not a daily driver. I would like the tires to grip well at launch when I want to play a little and handle good around turns, however, I don't want to replace them every 6 months lol. I currently have Goodyear Eagle F1's with good thread on the front, and will only need to replace the rear. I dont think it will make sense to replace all 4, just need better rear tires for play. What are you all using?

Sounds like the NT05R or Toyo Proxes TQ might be closest to what you are looking for

If it's not a daily driver I think you would be more than happy with the Nt05r. They are a very good all around radial with the only downfall is I would highly not recommend not driving on the highway in the rain with them.

Just a heads up, there is a Nt05 and a Nt05r. They look similar but the R is a drag radial and the other is a road race street tire. Different compounds and slightly different tread groves.

If any form of handling is on your list, steer clear of the MT line. I swore my mine had a busted suspension as it would not go straight down the highway. It would move 1/2 a lane with 0 steering input and it was not from crowning in the road. I threw my R888s in the same size tire and and rim and it went straight as an arrow. My car is all road race stuff with all rod ends. There is no play in it. So it sort of freaked me out.

I am not a huge fan, but the R888 will hold some power and does handle pretty good. You did not mention a tire size but assuming stock 275 40 17s. Toyo R888, Toyo RA1s are still available and are a great tire and work well in the rain. I would do all 4, but that is me. I have personally driven both and still own 8 R888s in various sizes.

If you are looking for a stock like tire with good grip in the dry and wet, look at the Firestone FIREHAWK INDY 500, not the Wide Oval ones. These have what they call the lightening bolt tread. I tried them on my SRT8 Magnum and really really liked them. They also come in a 275/40 17.

I have a bunch of other good tires I have liked, but they are not shown in the stock sizes.

Good luck.

You must of had a bad set of tires or something was up. The Et street handles just a tit worse than the Nt05r. Many many people run Mt ET streets with zero issues

How do the firestone firehawk indy 500 compare to the Goodyear eagle f1? Are they pretty close? Yes you are correct they are 275/40 17. I appreciate everyone's opinion.

Not sure, are you referring to the stock F1 Steel tries that came stock on the SS and WS6? I hated mine after the first 3k. The Firestone is way better. It does not have the stiffest side wall, but has lots of grip in the dry and wet.

They were awful. I think it might have been slightly the combo. I had 555RIIs on the front which are quite stiff, plus all the rod eye suspension. When the soft side walls of the MTs would roll around it steered the car. These were 315s on 10.5 x 17 rims.

I have another set of 315s on a 16 x 10 and have skinnies on the front. When I have this combo on it is not as bad, but the fronts move around as well as I usually have the front sway bar off or at least disconnected. With a good stiff tire on the front and tight suspension they were the scariest thing I have ever had on the car and just at 65 mph. I tried changing pressures around and everything.

I bought NT 05Rs to replace them but never drove on them, so I can not say if they were ok or not. I had 555Rs prior and loved them.

I have ran nitto nt555r's and am currently running toyo r888's and as mentioned before if you want a tire that can hold decent power and handles well the r888 is much better. Honestly on the street their straight line grip is about even and so is their tread life but they handle alot better then the 555r's did. Only drawback of the r888's is that they are noisy

Love my R888's.
stay out of the rain & you will have the best of all worlds.
As far as noise, I can't speak to that .....
converible, Kooks TD & freakishly loud blow off valve would keep me from hearing Hiroshima.

The R888 is a weird one in the rain. Wet pavement and they seem pretty good. I autocrossed 315s all corners on them on a wet course and won. Driving them home same day and got standing water on the highway and they hydroplaned at 50mph. The 555R was better in the rain.

hmmm luckily i have never hit standing water with mine but have driven with them plenty of times in rain with no issue. The 555r's were pretty good in rain and honestly are the only drag radial i would probably run since they were overall a pretty good street tire with decent traction. Have you ever tried the 555rII's? I was thinking about trying them out since they should be just like the drag radial but handle much better due to the stiffer sidewall.

Not a bad tire overhaul for routine street driving and decent ride quality. They had more complaints than the next tier up. But, for inexpensive tires they do a decent job. Other tires in the same category as those GY Eagle F1's would be Continental DW, Goodrich Comp2 sport, Nitto 555 regulars.

I had 275/40 17 555RIIs on the front. I do not think they make them any more. It was a good match for the 315/35 17 555R on the rear as they had the same compound, just different side wall construction.
