Toyo proxes r888 vs. Nitro 555r Curious if anyone has run both and your thoughts on which one you thought was better. Both have 100 AA UTQG rating, but sounds as if the r888 has a stiffer sidewall. I'll either run a 295/30/18 r888 or 305/35/18 555r. I want a tire that lasts around 15k miles and looking for more traction than my current nt05s provide without breaking the bank. I know there are better options, but I refuse to pay over $600 for 2 tires. I can get the r888 for $438 shipped and the 555r for $532 shipped. I'm assuming with heater hose mod in the rear with 305/35/18 555r I'll need to BFH mod the inner fenders at minimum, but might be able to squeeze the 295/30/18 r888s in with no modification. I assume the 555r will provide slightly better straight line performance, but is it worth the extra $100? I have a separate set of 15s I run at the track so I won't run these on the track at all. I'll probably purchase within this next week so figured id double check to get some opinions first. I'm leaning towards 555r as of now. Any info is much appreciated. |
Depending on what you are looking for on the street traction wise I would skip the 555R. I would go with the Nt05R and as long as you don't drive like a jerk off every stop light/ stop sign you can get 15,000 out of them and they handle very good. I do not have any experience with the R888 but I did with the 555R & Nt05R. |
You know my thoughts lol :) |
Id love to run those but they are $600+.. I love my 18s, but hate them for this reason lol.. I'm leaning towards the 555r, but saving $100 would be nice as well. Before I buy I was hoping someone ran both for a good comparison. |
I'm curious how the R888's are so cheap compared to everything else |
R888s are the same as the NT05R/NT01. Same compound. Difference is in the sidewall. NT05R handle well and have decent traction. They also do last a fair bit longer than say a Mickey Thompson, while handling better, but gripping worse. If you air them down to say 12-14# they can hook when hot. Otherwise, driving around at say 25# at normal street temps, they aren't a whole lot better than a regular tire in terms of straight line grip. |
Have you run the r888s before Jake? I thought NT05r was 00 UTQG and r888 was 100 UTQG. Wouldn't that be different compound? I may be mistaken. Thanks for the info. |

Mine are 315/35/17 by the way |

Ive ran both...the r888 has a stiffer sidewall so handles alot better. On the street they hook about the same but im sure at a drag strip the 555r would grip slightly better since it has a softer sidewall. Either one is a decent option just really depends what you want. |
Quiet storm, for the r888s.. how long did they last for you? If they have about the same traction on the street id say it may be worth saving $100 to go with those.. What's your set up and power level? Did you need to prewarm them to make them stick or did they do well without? Thanks |
I’m running a 315/35/17 in my 500ish rwhp M6 car! I love them! Great dry traction and excellent wet weather manners! |
They might be a slightly different compound. I thought R888/NT01/NT05R were all the same. And Proxes TQ/NT555R were a different compound. I don't really know. Toyo/Nitto obfuscates a little bit in an effort to not cannibalize sales. |

I’m sorry, i forgot to put that i’m running a R888. I’ve actually ran a 275/40/17 R888 on my car and was very happy with the traction on the street. Of course i have my pinion angle set up pretty aggressive which helps out too. |
If they are doing well with 500rwhp I should be good at 450. How long have you had them? Any indication of how long they might last? Im finding that most people that run the r888s have good things to say from what I'm finding in my searching. |

In my experience the 555r will 60 better than a r compound autoX tire. Although the sizes i used were not identical. |
I’ve only had them in the car for maybe 5-6k miles but they seem like they will last pretty decent. |
