The sanding takes so long because on a wheel, you have to pay really close attention to keeping all the lines and proportions even. Using an air tool or a drill with sanding rolls runs the risk of getting high and low spots, which when buffed will give it a "funhouse mirror" effect. So everything had to be done with regular sandpaper and alot of elbow grease. With the sandpaper grit, I went: 120, 150, 180, 220, 320, 360, 400. Then I switched to Micromesh and went: 1,500, 1,800, 2400, 3,200, 3,600, 4,000, 6,000, 8,000, 12,000. At the buffing stage I used tripoli on a spiral sewn cotton wheel, and finished up with white rouge on a mushroom bob.
The final process I'm going to do to the wheels once they're all polished is black chrome the perimeters where the rivets are set, and leave the rivets polished for contrast. It'll have this finish:
