Default need new tires?

Hey guys hope u can help Im replacing my rear tires cheap 275/40/R17(Summitomos) on my 98 SS and I wanted a gripier street tire , I also wanted to know how much wider I can go in the back with out any other mods. any advice would be appreciated.

If you pick up a pair of 17x11 wheels for hte back (assuming you have the ZR-1 style) you can go 315/35-17. I've seen people go up to as wide as 335's on them, but I'm not sure on the aspect ratio or how well they fit. IMHO if you want more grip go with a more expensive, higher quality tire instead of changing wheel size or trying to go wider. With 17x9s you won't be able to go much wider on tire size. That and only going a little wider probably wouldn't make too much difference in traction. In my experience getting a good set of tires can make all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the advice I do have the ZR-1 style wheels , do u recomend a different tire brand for my car for better traction at the line.

I have sumitomos HTRZ II summer tread. When I got em' hot, they'd hook well, and my clutch (48k miles original everythign on the car except brakes and tires) slipped more than the tires.. still managed a 2.1 60' time (see the link to my time slip below). Not bad IMO for launching at 2750 on $99 tires on junk clutch.

After my research tho, I am definately upgrading to a stickier tire.. BFGoodrich KDW
