Default What rims/tires to drive 40 miles to the track and race

I don't really want to run drag radials all day long, but would like the extra traction when I'm at the track, but I don't really want to abuse my driveline with slicks. I thought I would get a pair of stock '98 WS6 rims and throw the stickiest drag radials on them, and swap the rims/tires before heading to the track that night. Then I started thinking I might be better off with a different rim in order to use a different size drag radial, and not worry if it looks funny. What do you guys think?

Ultimately I want to get the most traction I can without worrying about slicks and be able to drive to the track on my tires so I don't have to keep tabs on my stock rims while I'm there.

If the only place you're driving with these tires will be the track, then you should be fine with any drag radial or wheel you choose.

You wouldn't have to swap out your fronts unless you wanted to.

Its really just a question of what you think looks acceptable. The stock 16" with drag radial should hook alot better than whatever you have on now... so I wouldn't waste too much money on wheels unless they are a true slick/skinny drag wheel setup.

I have a set of stock WS6 wheels. I may mount some drag radials on two of them and run them on the weekends but I'm staying with street radials for now to help prolong the life of my rear end till I can afford a better one.

Oh and as for which rim/tire...

Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial, 275/40R17, 26" tall
Stock 17" WS6 wheels

I think that would give u plenty of traction as compared with getting 16" wheels and your wheels would still match. Course the 16" wheels would be cheaper to get. Assuming you dont already have some of either lying around.

ife you want them for track only might as well get a set of prostars/draglites and 165R15's up from and some 275/50/15 bfg or mickey drag radials out back

this will behave ok on the street, be fairly inexpensive, and hook great at the track

I like the idea of the prostars or draglites, but don't want to spend that much money right now to replace all 4 and get all new rubber, cause I only head to the track a few times a year and do virtually no street racing.

Can I mix wheel sizes, such as going with 16" or 15" in back with Mickey's for extra traction and regular street tires on stock rims up front?

yeah thats no problem,

if you really wanna stay inexpensive but functional, just grab a pair of salad shooters for like 25-50 bucks (you can find these things everywhere) and throw some 255/50/16 mickey drag radials on them. cheap and very effective.

By "salad shooters" I would guess you mean any ole rim? and since you said 16" you mean they would get more traction for me? What width and tire size would be most ideal?

Salad Shooters are the 93-96 split 5 spoke wheel that looks like a salad shooter blade. The only size MT you'll find in a 16" drag radial is a 255/50/16. I have a set on white ZR1 wheels I picked up off ebay. They hook hard. Width isn't a huge a deal as having sidewall cushion so it will hook better. There was an interesting article in GM High Tech Performance about drag tires a few months back which lead me to go with 16" drag radials vs 17s.

i said 16" because it is the smallest diameter that will bolt up without grinding the calipers down (besides bogarts but then your getting WAY outta the inexpensive range)

That's the best way to go if you don't want to drive on DR's all the time. The only drawback is that the Shooters look like crap on anything other than in a garbage can. They are a cheap $$$ option though and work very well.
