315's rubbing

Next week I'm planning on ordering some 17x11 wheels with GS-D3 315's in rear. Now I am under the impression that a small amount of hammering of the wheel well will be required which isn't a big deal.

My question is, will I need to shave the bumpstop and/or roll the fender? Will I need an adjustable panhard bar? I daily drive my car so I'd prefer if it didn't have any rubbing problems.

BTW, my car isn't lowered and I dont' plan on lowering it!

I was having the same thoughts on my 99 TA. Thinking about calling tomz on monday to place a black zr1 rim set and the 275/315 set up.

Shaving the bumpstop - no. Just learn to jack the car up from under the differential, not from the sides anymore.

Fender rolling - maybe. It kind of depends on the car, shocks, springs, etc. I had to when I ran 315's, because it was cutting little slits in the sidewalls (which is bad, by the way). I'm lowered, though.

Panhard bar - Maybe. I'd get one, just to be safe.

shave the bumpstops.. Although they are correct by saying if you jack it up by the diff it wont cause any problems, remember that any shop is going to use a chassis lift which will cause problems.. it wont hurt anything shaving a little bit off anyway just make it run flush with the fender well...

My question is. Will I need to shave the bumpstop YES, takes like 30 min. no biggie. :judge:
Roll the fender? NO, but you will need to do some inner fender massaging.
Will I need an adjustable panhard bar? It's a good idea but you don't have too. :)

no need to shave the bumpstops if you jack it from the rear. No fender rolling necessary on an unlowered car. and pan hard bar IS a good idea... but not required. I plan on it and i have the exact set up ur going with assuming your wheel offset if +50mm

bastien May 13, 2007 02:37 AM

I didn't have to hammer it THAT much.

Didn't i just say that?
And yes you do need to do the grind mod, it's comming from somebody who had 11" zr1's with +50 offset on da ass. Adjustable panhard bar is only necessary if it's going to be dropped. :gtfo: :jest:

Point of clarification: When you talk about shaving the bumpstops, are you talking about just trimming back where it mounts (like in those pictures), or are you suggesting you actually grind off part of the rubber bomp stops themselves?

I trimmed the mounting brackets back a little, but I'm not comfortable with modifying the rubber part. Especially the Z28 style, which are more tapered.

Most important is the grinding part on the mounting brackets (tapered corners, actually just one corner) i did both. I'd say 1/4" in. maybe a little more. Bump stops (rubber part itself) i shaved off 1/8" in. from the facing side just to keep the clean/stock look, but you don't have to go there if you don't want to.
That was strictly by choice. :judge:

Ok thanks for all the advice. I'm going to start working on them tomorrow before my wheels/tires get here on Wednesday.

Which tools were used for the grinding? Kage, can you explain what you did to the bumpstop in relation to your picture? I can't tell.

Here's a link to Brent's site. Tells you everything you need to know. Just don't grind so much off as he did. Good luck.:judge:

Oh yeah, you don't have to take them off do it on the car less work.:judge:
I used 5" angle grinder, steel hammer and a 2lb rubber mallet.

blackmaro99 May 13, 2007 08:43 PM

Awesome, thanks for all the info!

carado1984 May 13, 2007 08:44 PM

you can get a decent 5" angle grinder for like 30 bucks. Just get one you can also use it as a cutter.
