Default Are my tyres letting me down??

Hi,
I've still got the original tyres on my 2001 WS6, and they have plenty of tread left. But they never seem to grip well especially in the wet.
Could my tyres be shot/hard and costing me some grip, as they are now 7/8 years old ?? (Car spent first 4 years in Michigan).

I have cooper zeon 2xs(or is it a 5?) all round, how good were they new, top, mid or low end?

Thanks for the help.

Coopers weren't the factory tires, they were Goodyears. I'd say they are the problem though, Coopers are a cheap brand.

I have a friend who put those Coopers on his Formula. The tread pattern sucks for evacuating water. He bought them because he needed all-season tires, but they look like they'd be a disaster in light snow. I'm not surprised that you can't get any grip with them.

Thanks for the info guys.
So should I aim for Goodyears, or should I try and get something else?

I need a good handling tyre more than a drag slick type tyre.

One thats good in the wet, and I do more rolling drag than from a stand still.

Please recommend several decent brands, as availability over here for these size tyres isn't great.

Many thanks for your recomendations.

Would we be correct in assuming that you're looking at a 275/40/17 tire? The Goodyear Eagle GSD, I've heard, is a very good HP tire, but expensive. If you're in Europe, how about Vredestein, Fulda or Falken?

Unless you live in Britain ...

Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is a champ for wet traction and great in the dry. BFG KDW is another good one. Note that those are warm weather tires. If you drive in the cold - especially snow - then you need all seasons. I really like the BFG Super Sport A/S for hi-po all-seasons.

Look into BFG KDW's, or some regular Nitto 555's (you may want to check out Nitto's 285/40/17 as they run thinner).

Depends who you talk to, tyres in the UK. I moved from there when I was 12 (22 now) so I've semi adapted!

Yes, definitely replace them. Nittos or KDWIIs.

Tires also dry up after about 4-5 years. So you aren't helping yourself there if they are pretty old. Other than that, the guys that have posted in here pretty much covered everything.

Thanks for the advise guys.
Someone told me they dry up after a while, but I weren't sure.
I will get some new tyres / tires.
Thanks again,

Paul.
