COMPLETED 8's in sail panels

5 Attachment(s)
well the intsall part is over, all i had to do is use a jigsaw to cut out the wider hole for the woofer, however to get the magnet to clear i had to cut out the extra piece of sheet metal behind where the magnet wil set. (excuse the rough toolmanship i broke all my jigsaw blades and made due with a drill bit :/ ....)
but they sound incredible way more than i gave them credit for, the stock monsoon amp has more than enough power to blast the DVC polk's.
now all thats left is to trim the plasic to get it to clear the bottom of the woofer and it will be done..... for now ;)

Lets see more shots when you get it back togather.

Looks good, but also want to see pics after its all done with sail panel on.

This is what mine look like.

I have deadener in there now though. As you can see in the picture they do touch the plastic sometimes....I had to push the panel out a little to get it to work right. I am running aftemarket power to them though.
If I had it to do over again....I wouldn't have. I would have put a stout 6.5" sub in there like a CDT ES_06+ on aftermarket power. It would have performed about the same as the 8" sub.

the plastic fit on great just needed a little trim to clear the woofer surround at the bottom. and the grill fits right on still. i love the setup way better than the 6.5's

southpaw0314 Feb 23, 2010 06:23 PM

if i were to use 6.5s would i have to use shallow ones or would the regular ones fit without having to cut behind them?

Breathing Fire Feb 23, 2010 06:29 PM

Nice job kee and OP. Makes me wish I could find my pix of my 8" build. How do you like the sound they put out?

kawix2 Feb 23, 2010 06:33 PM

I love it. i bought those in 4ohm Dvc so i could use the stock harness and amp. and they have great range and loudness.

With the ones I mentioned (CDT ES-06+) they would need about a 1" spacer. Most regular 6.5" subs fit fine with no spacers. The ES-06+ are beastly though.

Keep in mind mine are on aftermarket power and yes...they hit. Sound quality is great. Icould have duplicated the same thing using a high end 6.5" sub though on aftermarket power and not cut the sails....that's why I wouldn't do it again.
At the time I did this (4 years ago) though I didn't know about the other 6.5" subs so that's why I did the 8". Actually the ES-06+ are 6.8"...they still would fit fine though with a spacer.

I had quality 6.5 mids on aftermarket power for awhile and wasnt happy. Then I went to a middle of the road 8" sub in each sail panel and was surprised at the sound difference. The ability for it to hit the low frequencies was much greater than with the 6.5's and it had a much boomier effect to it as well.... I had people in my car listen to it and they assumed I had at least a 10" or 12" hidden in the t top area. I showed them and they were amazed that kind of bass could come from a cheap pair of 8's in the stock location...

kawix2 Mar 2, 2010 12:55 AM

did you put the grills back on? i i do they hit the woofer surround and rattle like hell, if i leave them off its great. im trying to get some ideas on what to do to make it more clean looking.

Bad Notch Mar 6, 2010 12:43 AM

which 8'' woofer fits the best ? are you running them with a tweeter like a separate or just the 8'' by itself on Low Pass ?

optikalilution Mar 6, 2010 08:36 AM

Are any of you running subs with the 8's? Would I be better with 8's or 6.5's. With a 12inn sub in the back for sound quality. I'm trying to put a good setub in my 10 speaker trans am. Have amps, and deck..need to decide on speakers and I'm torn between cdt and memphis

kawix2 Mar 6, 2010 11:53 PM

im running my 8's with no tweeter on a low pass amp just for bass cuz the all the other speakers have the treble. any 8 you but in will take a custom fit and like i did you will have to cud out that secondary metel sheet to get the magnet to clear

transam5.7lt1 Mar 7, 2010 06:22 PM

Will it generate enough resonance there to sound at peak performance?

kawix2 Mar 7, 2010 06:27 PM

yes they resonate great. mine have alot of bass but there only 8's so they wont go super low but there loud down to about the 80 to 90 hrz range.

GTO Eric Mar 9, 2010 07:23 PM

looks great..

530Racer Jun 30, 2010 10:22 PM

Has any one else done this with the 8"? Is there certain specs the sub needs to work with the stock mosoon amp? Sorry i am new to stereo stuff.

Breathing Fire Jun 30, 2010 10:27 PM

It is a lot of work. Different ways of doing it too. I did it in mine, but I lost all my pictures. To be honest with you a 10" or 12" would be the way to go. A lot of work. Does sound quite a bit better, but a lot of work for it. I don't remember the depth exactly, but on mine I couldn't have more that 4 1/2" I think.
