Default Need help wiring up Pioneer GPS unit in 87 TA

I have a Pioneer Avic 1 unit and would like to hook this up in my car. I will be having dual amps and 6 speakers attached when this unit is running. My stk connector is shown and my unit has a blue connector to it. Is there some kind of adaptor to make this work together.

Thanks

There is no stock connector in any of those photos. Believe it or not, the factory never used crimp-on quick disconnects in any of their wiring harnesses. Somebody in the past has butchered your wiring harness rather than spend the $10 for a harness adapter.

You can buy a replacement connector to fix the butchered factory wiring and then use a harness adapter to make your Pioneer plug in properly. Or, you can just splice into the already damaged harness using the wiring schematic in the Monsoon FAQ sticky to determine which wires to connect.

The Metra part number for the pigtail to repair the factory harness is 71-1858. The Metra part number for the harness adapter that connects to your Pioneer head unit is 70-1858.

Installing them is easy - just splice color for color (red to red, orange to orange, etc.) to the existing harness and then plug them together.

Whitebird00, this is a 87TA, wouldn't the wiring be a little different than the Monsoon FAQ sticky?

That plug in your picture is actually a metra harness end. Circuit City carried quick connect plugs that had the car end to that plug then another w that plug to a radio specific plug. They cut off the radio side an wired it in still allowing for the plug in of a radio specific plug, but since CC went under, I do not think metra makes them anymore.

Whoops... forgot that the harness listed was for 1988 thru 2002. (Missed it by that much.) For 1987 you need 71-1677-1 to repair the factory harness and 70-1677-1 to attach to your aftermarket head unit.

Actually, it's the harness that came with the former aftermarket head unit. The plug connects to the back of the HU and the wires were unfinished - just like the Pioneer harness shown in the photos. Whoever did the prior installation added the crimp-on disconnects.

The adapter you're thinking of came finished with a factory connector on one end and an aftermarket head unit connector on the other. You would specify car model and aftermarket HU brand so that they could give you a simple plug-and-play harness adapter - just plug one end into the HU and the other into the car, no splicing necessary. They were designed so even CC installers couldn't get it wrong. But, as you mentioned, they haven't been available for awhile unless you can find them on eBay.

Wiring info: http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...tail/1858.html

I would have said to go for the correct adapter if you still had the stock connector and were thinking of chopping it off, but I say no reason to bother fixing that unless you intend to be swapping head units often.

Thanks for the info.. I guess I have to replace the current connector. Do I buy the ones that Whitebird00 mentioned?

For 1987 you need 71-1677-1 to repair the factory harness and 70-1677-1 to attach to your aftermarket head unit.

You can buy what he suggested, or you can just clip the old connector off and wire in the radio harness directly (like you currently have) using the wiring diagram in my link. Whitebird's way is the "right" way but I personally wouldn't bother buying both the repair harness AND the adapter for a 1987 car... Up to you.
