Default How do you splice 5 wires into 1 wire on your engine harness?

I have to splice together a total of 5 small wires (about 20ga) into one 16ga wire on my wiring harness. So far, I have been using adhesive lined shrink tubing on all of my connections, and I want something that is equally weatherproof, heat resistant, and durable. I don't want to cut corners here - what is the correct way to do this??

If I use the regular shrink tubing I have been using, I don't think there's enough glue to work around all the small wires and give me a good seal.

For some of the grounds on my harness, I see GM connected several small grounds with one large ground by using what looks like a piece of nylon shrink tubing and some sort of white glue looking stuff. Is that what I have to do?

Thanks, -Dave

Good ole' fashion soldering iron, electrical glue that most auto part stores carry, and heat shrink.

and just solder it at the top instead of using the twist on.

Are you doing this for just grounds?

If so I would put them 5 20ga wires into one 12ga or 10ga wire..that is just my opinion though..

Electrical glue, huh? I never heard of that... so do I just try to copy what GM did with their grounds?

It is the INJ1 and INJ2 circuit, where all of the injector wires and the coil pack wire comes together into one circuit for each cylinder bank. I am using a truck engine wiring harness and a fuse box from an Impala. The truck has all independent wires that go into one fuse on the truck fuse box, where the impala has one large wire. Each Impala injection circuit uses a 20A fuse, where the truck uses a 15A fuse.

Oh.. ok I got what you are saying.. yea all them wires are spliced internally. There is that one larger 16ga wire that splits into the 4 smaller ones. You should be fine with that as long as you isolate it to each bank.

go to a home store and buy a can of liquid electrical tape.

Plasti dip, the cans of stuff they sell for coating tool handles, is probably the same thing.

i would definitely solder the connection.

Just use the heat shrink with the glue that shrink 3:1 instead of the stuff that only shrinks 2:1
You can also loop 1 or 2 of the 20 ga. wires in the harness, so they enter the splice on the same end as the 16 ga. wire
You can also use 2 layers of heat shrink, put a short piece each end on the splice and a bigger one overlapping them

I buy mine from Waytekwire
Polyolefin Dual Wall is 3:1 and has sealant in it
Cross-Linked Polyolefin Heat Shrink is 4:1, I've never bought it, and I don't think it has sealant in it, but its listed for automotive harness work, so it might
