Car sounds like it has mud tires on it, any guesses?
Well I noticed this pulsating howl coming from the rear of the car and took it a to a friends shop, where his mechanic went for a ride with me. The noise sounds like amplified road noise, kinda like I have All terrain tires or something. He said it sounded like axle bearings to him, so I had them replaced (they were bad) but the axles were supposedly pitted so the sound was still there, now I have got new stock axles in the car and the noise is still there. Then we replaced the back U-joint since it felt way too tight. Still noisy. Now we think it could be the pinion bearing since it appears to be leaking a little. Anyone have this same problem of have any guesses as to what this noise is. I am just sick of spending money on things that don't fix it! thanks in advance

Sounds like the Pinion bearing to me. Mind did the same thing back before Christmas. Made a lound whirring noise at acceleration and stopping.Got it replaced and problem went away.

Few questions
What type of tires do you have?
Is the noise there while accelerating , decelerating or at constant steady speed, or coasting?
Pinion bearings make noise (if going bad) usually while acelerating or decelerating.
Carrier side bearings usually(if going bad) make noise while accelerating, decelerating, coasting

It makes the noise all the time, acc, decel, and coasting. I can start to hear it above 30 mph. Its the worst on the interstate. Right now I have firestone SS20's on the rear and GSC's on the front, but even when I change to the drag radials the sound doesn't go away. Thanks for all the replies.
