I have bought a 5.3 engine out of a 01 4x4 truck.i can buy the transmission also for an extra 250.00. Here is my question. Can the 4x4 trans be changed to a car trans. Or is it more trouble than it's worth. What I mean is pull the transfer case and put a different tailshaft on it like a car would have.

You must disassemble the entire trans to replace the output shaft. At that point you could easily build the trans up or at least freshen it before reassembly or just put it back together. Then you will also need a 2wd tailhousing.

Going price for a core used to be $180, so $250 for a known working trans isn't bad...if you need a core to build.
