Default Chemical to clean aluminum engine parts that could be had locally?

I've pulled the ls1 out of my trans am to replace some seals and clean everything up while I paint the engine bay. I want to strip the block and all of the aluminum bits and brackets back to the cast aluminum. I don't have access to any glass or soda blasting and since I'm not taking the motor apart hot tanking it isn't an option. What are some options for chemicals that can commonly be found locally to help strip this stuff? I've done some research and know not to use muriatic acid or oven cleaner. I can't find any of the Zepalum product here. Ideas?

Purple Power works excellent.. let it sit and then work it in with a bristle brush and then wash it off..

either that or get a parts washer with solvent at harbor freight

Cool

Contact a local Safety Kleen rep and ask about their Aqueous Parts Cleaning systems and chemicals. These are great for removing all types of debris.
