What kind of "regular" paint were you told you can use? My experience has been that rattle can paint will eventually peel off if not prepared properly. The other thing you risk with spray paint from a can is that it is not that flexible and can crack when installing the covers because they have to be flexed and twisted a little to get them in.
High temp paints or clears neither one are needed. I've done 100's of sets of these using automotive paint and clears and never had a problem. Of course I do use some special additives to the paint to make it stick and make it flexible.
