how to get the shifter off?

I have an auto and i can't get the shift **** off. Im trying to remove the council so i can take the carpet out. One of the books says to just take the push button out and pull. Well the handle isn't going anywhere.

any ideas?

you took that staple on the front out of the **** ? should just pull right off

Sweet! I had a nicer shifter *** sitting laying around, and I could not figure out how to change em out, now i know!

EDIT* My new *** looks real nice
